This is one of the first 'fuel' threads i've read where most people agree good fuel = better performance. I was looking at a Club GTi thread where cupra owners were saying tey couldn't tell any significant difference between super market and vpower. I know when i have been using optimax in the cupra, and than have to put in some 95 ron the car is very obviously slower. Putting in optimax after crap fuel is like getting the 'cold weather effect' on those nice crisp mornings.
Also, i have notced the same on the VRS - BP standard derv is crap, shell standard derv (they only do one) is fantastic. Despite what most people maintain, there is a massive difference in performance between the two fuels. Anyone know how derv is measured for refinement? i seem to remember somthing about centanes? can anyone prove my theory about shell diesel?
Cetane is essentially how easily the fuel ignites under compression. The higher the number the smoother, more powerful and quieter the car will feel (especially when cold as this is when fuel is harder to ignite - hence the louder diesel knocking sound)
Certain "high performance" diesels such as BP ultimate and Shells diesel extra (the only one they sell) also will have better atomisation which also aids better combustion = more power/torque.
