This is one of the first 'fuel' threads i've read where most people agree good fuel = better performance. I was looking at a Club GTi thread where cupra owners were saying tey couldn't tell any significant difference between super market and vpower. I know when i have been using optimax in the cupra, and than have to put in some 95 ron the car is very obviously slower. Putting in optimax after crap fuel is like getting the 'cold weather effect' on those nice crisp mornings.

Also, i have notced the same on the VRS - BP standard derv is crap, shell standard derv (they only do one) is fantastic. Despite what most people maintain, there is a massive difference in performance between the two fuels. Anyone know how derv is measured for refinement? i seem to remember somthing about centanes? can anyone prove my theory about shell diesel?

Cetane is essentially how easily the fuel ignites under compression. The higher the number the smoother, more powerful and quieter the car will feel (especially when cold as this is when fuel is harder to ignite - hence the louder diesel knocking sound)

Certain "high performance" diesels such as BP ultimate and Shells diesel extra (the only one they sell) also will have better atomisation which also aids better combustion = more power/torque.

Never tried BP ultimate because of the price near us. Anyone knoe the different ratings of the diesels or which is the best quality? anyone know ehere i can find out more? thanks.

I've always used V-Power / Optimax, even in the Saxo...

Try it the other way round, run a diet of V-Power then get stranded in an area where you can't get any in and have to put Tesco 95 Ron in, you'll notice a whole world of difference!

Plus I'm only a month away from getting a Free iPod Nano from Shell. With your pluspoints card if you buy normal fuel you get 1 point per litre, with V-Power you get 2.5 points a litre.

Spend good money on good fuel (money I'd of had to spend anyway getting to work) and get gifts back! I like! :D

i get better from shell fuel, i do notice it actually!

And i will never run my car on anything but vpower now, it doesnt liek it and its what its been mapped for, excluding 113octane methanol on top of the fuel im injecting! :)

edit: i know that when i put 95 ron in, i get about 17psi from 21 and poor idling. absolutely terrible!

I use Tesco 99 Ron and get average 33mpg that with mixed driving.. On a run had 41mpg !!

If I can't get to a tesco.. I use Optimax.... BP ultimate seems only marginely better than standard 95 ron which I only put in a few quid to get me to a Tescos or Shell garage !!

Im having some issue with fuel.. i seem to get way better mileage than with normal 95 and struggle to with v-power... even though vpower is 6-7p more!!
on 95 ron of £10 fuel i get around 45-50 miles and on vpower i struggle to get to get near 30, ive replace the pre 02 sensor....
does it take time for it to adapt for econmoy to increase?

V-powerrr everytime! I get 35mpg travelling to work probz bit of town bit of rural driving 16miles there and 16 miles back. Weekend i get 27 to 30 mpg. Is deffo up on 95 run. All other fuels are nowhere near as good.

Remeber however you need about 2 tanks of a certain fuel for the ecu to adapt and get the best from it no good swapping every tank for a diffrent fuel.
