funny noise when cordy cold?!?!

my cordy 1999 P reg 1.6 8v sx...
when i start it up in the morning it makes a funny whining nose,,,sounds like when a turbos winding up i suppose.. cant quite work out what it is but it is getting so frustrating.!
any ideas?

(have tried looking under the bonnet but nothing)

For a guess it might be the fuel pump getting going.

water pump bearings ??

alternator bear? spray wd40 on the bearings and see if it makes any difference
