Gearbox is done... oh dear :(

ok, so i got my gearbox done today, whilst at it i also had a drive shaft boot done and had my clutch looked at.
was quoted 150 at several places just for the box, so i went to a guy who charged me 60 for having my clutch done. he said 60 for the box so i goes and says the box and the boot plus the clutch needs looking at.
ended up at 85 punds which i cant complain at cos its far cheaper than the rest of the people who quoted me.

couldnt do it myself in the end, had a look and decided it was too much of a difficult task

during the gearbox swap i get a phone call. my clutch is fooked... partially anway, it will still work but some bits have broken apparently, i can get a new clutch under warrenty but i have to pay 60 fitting, no way round it this is how it is. the car drives fine and has done since i had the clutch done just under a year ago.

theres a month left on the warrenty of the clutch but i hope to sell the car soon, but probably not within the month. should i have the clutch done do you rekon at 60 pounds labour and new clutch or drive it as it is until i sell it. the guy told me it could last now the life of the car or it may go whenever, but its been like that a while i guess and its been fine, no problems with it at all, doesnt slip.

cant decide whether to have it done, its another 60 pounds id rather not spend on a car im getting rid of soon, but then i think if the warrenty runs out and i have to buy a new clutch again its going to cost me double.

On a positive note the gearbox i bought for 75 pounds fitted!!! and its vvv.smooth and feels like new which put a smile on my face even after the bill and bad news

obviously locking the stable door after the horse has bolted, but surely if they noticed this during the change of the gearbox, they could have replaced it then and there with v. little effort?

Seems harsh that if they're going to replace the broken parts FOC under warranty that they didn't just bung a new one in then and there...

not quite, the place i bought the clutch from didnt have one in stock, thus meaning id have to wait till tuesday to get one, then id have to pay double (which would be the 60 labour cost anyway) because my car would have been up on a ramp and he'd have to have turned buisness away as my car was in the way... i can see the point, but me being stuborn i wasnt paying a man to do nothing with my car so if i do end up paying him ill make him work for the money not just leave the car until the part comes in.

I cant decide what to do though
My dads said hell pay for it doing, but i just cant justify pumping more money into it when i know its only worth about a grand... (he says with fingers crossed)

I would of slapped a new clutch on anyway regardless of wear.....

i only had my clutch done though just less than a year ago, so i saw no point in replacing it...

in all honesty - it depends on how you drive.

I did a clutch in a year, but lets face it - they're not ever good quality.

thats why he said mine had gone, because of the way i drive. i guess cos ive only got a 1.4 i give it a bit of stick to make it go, but then you pay for it... all fun and games at the end of the day, give tomorrow a miss and ill have something else to moan about after that and ill just forget all about it.

im going to leav the clutch i think, use the money to fix the body work and what have you. if it goes it goes and if it doesnt bonus

the bit of the clutch thats broke is from what he said, the centre bit is breaking away from the outter bit... but hes moved the biting point to the edge of the plate or something to try and make it last.

my 1.4 was driven to within an inch of it's life every time I drove it. the 3rd clutch let go when I spent a day doing autotesting (did the course faster than remapped 20vt's)

seriously though, once I did the clutch it gave me the confidence to do pretty much anything.

I think the guy is pulling your plonker - the clutch is self adjusting. so I can't see what he'll be doing.

oh well,

got the old gearbox with me though thought itd be interesting to open it up and see whats going on in there... if you shake it you can hear things loose in there and the input shaft moves forwards and backwards.

i was thinking if the clutch did actually go that i might do it myself, so thats always an option for a money save

ive never owned a car that has driven as quietly as mine does now... minus induction noise, always had a noisy gearbox on this baby

How hard actually is it to remove a gear box from the 1.4 ibiza? can you change a clutch with the engine still in place? or do you have to drop it?
is there a quide any where?

from what i saw and what he told me. everything pretty much at the gearbox side of the engine comes off, the engine stays in place tho, but will need supporting when the box is untightened. then undo and remove the drive shaft on the gearbox side of the engine and undo the drive shaft on the other end but you can leave the wheel and other bits on this side. then when everythings undone its just a case of pulling the box off and getting another in.

i was going to do it, 20yr old basic/bit more mechanical skills, but the box was far too heavy, and it was a rainy week. gave a guy 75 pounds to swap the box, and a bit more for a couple of other bits that needed doing

currently got mine in a workshop left on the lifts cos the clutch i ordered was the wong size. had a look myself and the job is made much easier if u got a set of lifts!

i know mines a 20vt but they removed loads of crap from mine just to get the box off. its getting the gear box off which is the hard bit..swapping the clutch looks very straight forward
