Have got a Mk1 Leon FR TDi with approx 80k miles on the clock.

I've only owned it for approx 3k miles & I've noticed that I am getting some whining from the 'box / driveline mainly under acceleration. It goes away when I press the clutch pedal down. Has anyone else experienced this? Question is, is this the start of something serious (if so, what?!) or do they all do it to some extent?

I'm not looking to spend a fortune on the car, but was wondering whether it is worth changing the gearbox oil to see if that quietens things down? What oil is reccommended for these engines? Is it an easy job?

Thanks in advance.

It may be the clutch release bearing, is it noticeable when in neutral and then goes away when the clutch is depressed?

I don't 'think' its clutch release bearing. There is some noise from this at idle, which does go away when you dip the clutch but its not significant. this is more of a whirring / whining noise when driving along.

I thought i was starting with gearbox problems with my leon. It turned out to be a wheel bearing, does the noise alter as you steer the car as you travel along.

definately not bearing - it goes when i push the clutch pedal.

How much am i looking at for a new flywheel? Is it diy'able??

Not to panic you but i had it on my old car turned out to be the diff bearings only found out after it blew a hole in gear box i'd have it checked to be safe

hmmm. That doesnt sound good! Anyone else experienced this-is it a common problem on these cars? How much to fix?
