Hi

Just wondering whether the gearbox is meant to be quite stiff when changing gear?

I though it was just normal but my brother drove my car and he said it shouldnt be like that to change gear.
It goes into every gear fine without crunching so not the syncros

My car is a '99 2.0 L 8v Mk2 Facelift

Just wondering if i could get your thoughts on this,

Could it be time to change the oil in the Gearbox or something more sinister at work here ?

It's a rod change as opposed to cable change, so does feel very stiff ...at first.

Got out of my 1.4 Ibiza to test drive the 2.0 8v, and I asked the same question lol ...it's normal mate

It could be that the bushings in the linkage are past their best and/or starting to break up - it's a common failing of these linkages on mk1 & mk2 Golfs. The good news is that the bushings aren't expensive. I seem to recall that Euro Car Parts sell a bushing kit for a couple of quid...

Ok cheers Guys

Thanks for the info. Ill get my mate to take a look at it and maybe go for a drive. the cars only done 61k and only 7 Years old, could they be going allready ?

It's possible - my 8v is the same age, albeit with rather more miles (97k). The linkage has already been rebushed a couple of times. I don't recall exactly when the first time was, but it was certainly a couple of years ago. The linkage has since been stripped and rebuilt again following a period when the car was laid up in a garage for a few months whilst I was working overseas.
