Hi guys,

Im looking at trying to get a nice sporty tone from the exhaust of a PD170, what would be the best thing to do?

New exhaust? Gutting DPF? Remove silencer?

Ideally I don't want to put a new exhaust on it as that's costly so would gutting the DPF do anything for sound? Or would it be a case of removing a silencer? If so how loud are we talking? I'm not after, wake everyone up in a 10 mile radius, boy racer loud just a nice burble on tickover and pulling away that I could hear inside the car.

Any help or videos are all appreciated.
Thanks.

just been out in my mates 2015 STI and I am also now looking for something like you too :D

Best way? Record the Audi R8 V10 special advert and play it on a loop......

mufflerectomy and dpf delete.

you'd be surprised just how well a 16v diesel can sound.

When you say 'mufflerectomy' do you mean removing the silencer? Thanks for the info.

As for the other two's recommendations well, erm ... I'll keep it in mind

a mufflerectomy is removing the back box for a straight through pipe.
I had a 2.0 tdi mk5 golf, had a straight through on it and it sounded awesome. possibly a little loud for some but I liked it.

Ah right ok, is that a costly procedure? When you say a little too loud for some roughly how loud are we talking and is it constant or just when reving hard and pulling away?

Thanks.

It cost me the price of a few 90 degree pipes and a nice stainless tip.
It was only noticeably louder when I pained it.

Also turbo noise is more noticeable with the DPF gutted. Might get a straight through pipe....

Not concerned about MOT failure though?

Here's a video of mine with the backbox deleted, I like the sound it makes now!!

I like it. How does it sound on tickover, does it have the nice burble sound? Or is nothing that noticeably different until you put your foot down?

Thanks for the advice everyone

Most people opt to gut the dpf and leave the shell in place. who's to know it's empty?

It's a little louder in tickover, it does give the odd pop and bang but not as much as I hoped it would! My next mod is dpf gut and remap I'm sure that will add a few more into the mix!!

The DPF gut is the next for me. How much did the back box delete cost in the end? Or what would be a rough estimate in order to get it done.

Thanks
