GPS/Handsfree/MP3 Solution

Warning: long post ahead!

Short version:
Which is better, a GPS phone with a bluetooth handsfree kit or a standalone GPS unit with handsfree built in?

Long version:

-------------

I'm looking for an all-in-one (or as few units as possible) solution for having GPS, handsfree calls and MP3 in my Mk 4 Ibiza. I want to be able to play everything (i.e. calls, directions and MP3s) through the car speakers and, for safety reasons, have as much voice control as is feasible.

Basically, I see two options:
  1. Phone/PDA with GPS built in, plus whichever Parrot model plays MP3s.

Pros: can conveniently take my GPS with me when I leave the car
Parrot bluetooth compatibility seems to be good

Cons: Not sure - I've not used GPS software on a PDA before - how well does it compare to the standalone units?
    Few options for voice control.
  2. GPS unit with bluetooth and MP3 player, plus any compatible phone.

    Pros: nice easy install
Cons: Not sure which phones are compatible - I'd like to use an O2 XDA Orbit 2 or HTC Touch Diamond.

I'm kind of leaning towards option 2 at the moment (looking at the TomTom GO 730 or Garmin Nuvi 860). Bluetooth compatibility looks better on the Garmin, but apparently the handsfree on the Garmin isn't great.

I've also been looking at mounting options and quite like the idea of mounting on the a-pillar, like in lazysod's post here, but I can only find pillar mounts for gauges. Does anyone know of a pillar mount for a satnav?

-------------

So what do you all think? I'm not necessarily looking for specific recommendations (although that would be good), but any discussion around this topic would be really useful.

check out the ICE section, there are usually threads about double-din hu's which can control everything from phone to ipod and give you bluetooth handsfree and suit the car nicely
