Was only joking Bill, wasn't supposed to be a dig at you, its just that there is more than a handfull of people running over 450hp 1.8ts in the country, who have all had their fair share of problems and overcome them in different ways.
Different setups bring their own sets of problems, but nothings impossible and most have been overcome by someone somewhere.

many/any of these 450bhp motors active in motorsport?
(and I dont mean 1/4 mile 10seconds at a time :p )

Its a big distinction between what works in extreme duress vs fast road/track day use. Huge gap in my own experience.

Their mainly track toys as there isn't many race series which include 450hp motors, without huge financial backing. We do supply a guy who does Autocross with close to 500hp.
Don't knock 1/4 miles though Bill, i have upmost respect for people who take it seriously. Probably a better way to test power and grip,as its less about driver skill.

What race series are you in then Bill???

What you going to use it for Hooch???

I race in Castle Combe saloon car c'ship last 2 years in class B 1800-3000cc 2wd

1/4 mile does'nt float my boat, and in duress terms on the motor, its not in the same league as circuit racing, nor anywhere close. 12secs of flat out throttle proves little longevity wise.
I too have respect for those who do so at a very high level, and it is a skill in itself to be able to go fast......... but that was'nt my point in the context of mechanicals and the extremes they see.

hooch wouldnt mind you posting up everything you got for the internals just so us less god like people know lol

Looks like he's got the bottom end covered, everything that we recommend (other than imo the pauter rods are a touch overprised!):)
Now he just needs a big port head with uprated valves (inconel exhaust and nitride coated inlet and possibly oversized), uprated springs and titanium retainers.:)

Just out of interest, what code ARP stud set did you get??? As ive come accross two diferent codes, so i oredered both but have yet to work out the difference???

Gearbox wise, we have used a heat treated 02a diesel gearset which seems to be working out well;)

jon, does the gears you mention fit in a 5 speed?

if so can i have more details please :)

as for arp bolt sets

the main stud kit is 204-5402

and the head set isnt actually arp but is 'RACEWARE' part# RWE-1038

hope this helps :)

not really a big input into this thread, but we tune 60's Lambretta's that came out of the factory with 5-6 bhp, we are now putting 30+bhp through the same gearbox's but we have them Cryogenically Frozen to strengthen them. I dont know if this sort of thing would work with car gearbox's or has even been tried with them, but its worked with great success on our Lambretta's, and has stopped us breaking gear teeth - which is especially important when we are runng gearsets that arent made anymore and a rarer than rocking horse poop. Good luck with the conversion, im hopefull going to be tackling something similar in the new year if i get another Ibiza

Its a 1.9 tdi 02a gearset, which as pdcupra mentions, has been cryogenically treated (tbh i didn't realise that the process was to freeze them:redface:), will keep you informed on its success;)

What management/boost control will you be using, as playing with the power curves can seriously help with the life of transmitions. I have quite a fragile 4wd system on my own car, so i control the boost through an Apexi AVC-R, which enables me to change boost levels and curves differently in each gear. Defo one to think about especially as your going to be externally gated.

i used to run an avcr but sold it as i never got on with it. it ended up the map on the set up was shite so that may have been adding to my problems!?

i may try a different controller!? blitz etc

will i need the whole gearset/gearbox or just certain parts?

thanks for info guys. :)

nowt wrong with apexi avc-r - runs badger wagen fine in racing with more control than n75 was able to offer.

The avcr is far better than the Blitz, because it deals in realtime figures and not just adjusting gain controls. They are a touch complex for some (and pointless for most), but as long as you wire them correctly you can just put them on 'self learn' and will set itself up to a certain extent.

I would use the whole box mate, most are interchangeable, but there are a few codes that are different, get one and try it if you want, nothing to loose.

Oh yeah, while i think of it, get yourself an egt guage this time. Several people on here may have listnened to me spouting on about them, but imo they are the single most important thing on a big turbo install.

Ok cool, just checking:D

Sorry mate, yeah a 1.9tdi golf box, or perhaps the ibiza tdi box??? Will look into it.

If you were trying to use it in conjunction to the n75 then you would have had probs. What management you using?

PhilW - I'm not a huge fan of the ratio's on the 02m 6 speed for big turbo 1.8ts, altho it is a strong ish box.

they'd be really really long? wouldn't that make it slower - and potentially put more strain on the clutch (and the rest)

im on standard management. had n75 disconnected but sill electricaly connected.

i just missed out on a golf box for £30 on ebay as im a little worried about the ratio's as diesels dont rev

couldnt i just get my gears cryogenically treated as mentioned before? i then know the ratio's are good
