Handbrake fault.

Hi all just picking all your brains
Car failed MOT for handbrake not engaging on the drivers side, what could this be? caliper or cable? im hoping cable

my caliper was jamming slightly when releasing the handbrake and wore the pads out quicker on the driver side...all that my mechanic done was release the caliper as if replacing the pads (even though i had to replace my pads but not happened since) and apply some grease to the housings where the pins go

Ok so its not likley to be a caliper replacment because it passed on the footbrake test just not handbrake test

ye possibly a slight seizing...it is very unlikely to be the cable due to the design. although some members have had to replace their calipers so not uncommon, but try the release and lubricate before forking out for a replacement caliper

but because yours isn't engaging rather than not releasing fully there may be something wrong with the caliper. let's hope not

Sounds like its just sticking a bit.
Just needs taking off and cleaning up so it can move freely. 30mins tops for a mechanic. Maybe an hour at most with a jack and axle stands at home.

I agree, a good old take to bits and clean up - probably the right time to think about fitting external handbrake lever return springs. (discussed elsewhere and on Skoda forum)

Pop your head under the back bumper get someone to operate the handbrake. If the cable and handbrake lever on the caliper move back and forth you know the cable is fine. Then it can only be the caliper
