Helix clutch/smf vs Sachs organic...

Just wondering if any people have any views on the above for my Furby vRS

Im very very close to getting a new clutch as mine slipping is now a permanant feature (altho it has done well... 70k remapped, 85k total)

Ive heard all this stuff about clutch chatter and sharp biting points for various uprated clutches.. but how bad is it in reality?

As you see above, my car does alot of miles... 85k in 3.5 years, and its still going to climb, so preferably i dont want a clutch that will be a biyach to use in traffic, altho i wouldnt mind a bit of leeway for a bit more power when the time comes.

I have the chance to get a second hand helix setup, for close to the same price as a new Sachs organic setup... just wondering if the helix would be too harsh?

Any comments/experience?

Hello Colin,

Have you thought about just getting an uprated friction disc? Could be quite a bit cheaper.

Could be all you need unless you are planning a big turbo.

e.g. Allard suggest an uprated friction disc even with a VT2 hybrid turbo.

Just a thought.

That's exactly the setup I've got, and the clutch feels very 'OEM' - but yet it's not slipped on me once. Oh and I've done 154,000 miles! ;o)

Pricewise, I think the disc is approx. £200, obviously plus the labour.

Hmmm. ideally id like a bit of leeway for "a turbo" in the future... and im looking for a one-time fix for the clutch.. id rather not have to replace it again while i still own the car.
Does anyone know how much a OE clutch kit costs in comparison to uprated ones?

SMF : Don`t bother unless you want more then 230 bhp then still have a good long think about it. SMF will clatter when in neutral with your foot off the clutch which on my PD160 i didn`t take alot of notice of to start with but soon started to bug the hell out of me.
Sashs organic disc is rated at about 340lb and Helix is about 360lb torque but no doubt both would hold more and are both very good clutches. Paddle/Puck clutches will hold more torque but are meant to damage the flywheel over time and are not so nice to drive in traffic as they tend to bite alot quicker.
For a secondhand Helix pressure plate and disc i wouldn`t pay more then a few hundred pounds for really as you are looking at a good £200 labour bill to put the clutch in and maybe the same to take it out later unless you really know the person and know the clutch is newish and well looked after.
