You need VAG-com to read the codes, generic code readers won't get all of them.
A faulty MAF will send incorrect information to the ECU and affect the performance. Unplugging the MAF causes the ECU to revert to a stored map for the MAF function. If this is better than the signals your MAF is sending, then the MAF is definitely at fault. It doesn't always catch faulty MAF's, depends on how bad the fault is.
