We have an ibiza 1.2 and suddenly the gears became really difficult to engage and the biting point became super super low (like 5cm off the floor)

Have tried it again this morning...the gears are engaging easier but still much clunkier than before...and the biting point is still ubber low

Any ideas what this could be? I'm thinking clutch slave cylinder...but how can I check for sure?

Could be the slave cylinder - or the master cylinder.

Quickest one to check is the clutch pedal - is it returning to the top of its travel ?
(If not then you arn't getting full stroke of the pedal to push the slave cylinder)

it does return all the way up without sticking...

would that imply slave cylinder rather than master cylinder?

It sounds like it could be slave cylinder.

Have you checked the fluid level ? - are you using fluid ?

If you pump the pedal - does the biting point change ?

pumping the pedal doesn't change the biting point...

also...i didn't think slave cylinders had fluid? i.e. isn't the resevoir on the master cylinder?

i apologise for my lack of mechanical knowledge   :D

What i meant was - have you noticed the fluid dropping in the master cylinder reservoir ?

If YES - then look for a leak somewhere at the master or slave cylinder.

If NO - I think the master cylinder may be on way out
