Help! My air-con has died

For some bizarre reason, I have got no air conditioning coming through into the car.

The fan works, and the heating certainly works because the car warms up when set to HI. However, with LO it doesnt work at all and its now driving me mad today!

Any bright ideas as to what the issue may be?

This happened to me. It turned out to be the aircon compressor. The dealers that fixed it for me under warranty said its a common failure

I know how you feel mate, been roasting away in my car for the last week after my gear box mount broke and the engine ended up moving a bit and breaking some aircon pipe which let all the gasses out. Just waiting for the dealer to get the parts in.

I had a thread here about the same problem last week. My dealer has a replacement compressor on order for me.

Had mine done about a year ago and think it is on the way out again. Going into dealers for a diagnosis soon along with one or two other issues before warranty expires.

There is definately pressure - just checked it, but when I turn on the air-con, or try, there is no movement in the revs.

Possibly needs to be re-gassed but as already posted, likely you need a new compressor which will be a warrnaty item, get down to the dealers and get them to sort it no pint buying yourself if covered.

Looks like windows down for you this weekend then !

have somebody switch the car from auto to eco whilst you stand over the engine, putting the blower fan on low should help avoid unnecessary noise. You should hear a click as the magnetic clutch engages or disengages.

Dont do the change from auto to eco to often, perhaps wait 1 minute between pushes as there is a programmed switch on and switch off delay so minimise the clutch actions if somebody is playing with the buttons.

I think these are modern electronically controlled variable displacement compressors which are more efficient but they are more prone to damage caused by low refrigerant.

The modern systems have a low amount of refrigerant to start with so a small loss becomes a significant percentage of the capacity.

Have the dealer look at it, if the compressor is damaged by low refrigerant then the system may need flushed to remove metal particles which will just damage the new compressor.

Id recommend a recharge on the car's 2nd birthday then every 2 years after that as opposed to every 3 as is normally recommended.

I think the likes of quick-fit will do it free unless they can reduce the air temp by 10% so try there and hope they can only cool it by 9.9% then its free!! (i think anyway)

I had this problem last year on my FR TFSI with about 15000 miles dealer changed compresser. These have been modified and shouldn't give any further problems. The difference is in the pulley (the clutch setup on the pulley) Kev

I guess I'll join the list too, mine died on thursday, made a horrible gurgling noise and started coughing hot air into my face, pressure tested the system yesterday when the car had its 20,000 mile service, no fault codes registered, but the compressor didn't click when switched from eco to auto mode.
My problem will come when I try and claim on the warranty, I just know that the dealer will take one look under the bonnet, and say "Oh dear, you've modified it, your warranty is void".....

Compressor is either knackered or drive belt has slipped off or you will have a blockage in your system which will stop the refrigeration process.

Interesting thread... my compressor has just bitten the dust too. I only noticed it when I came to use the aircon... 2 weeks out of warranty. Seat are only offering to cover half of the repair cost, which is just over £1060. Seems like a pretty unfair offer, especially if it is a part known to fail too early- it is clearly inadequate for its purpose, and I don't think I should pay £530 'cos they put a part in that can't do the job for a reasonable period.

My other thread on this topic before I spotted this one is here if anyone is interested:
