help required, rear door will not open!

finally decided that if the LCR is going i need to get my finger out and sort this out.

the problem is that the passenger side rear door is jammed shut. when i unlock all the doors this one fails to unlock. when i try and open the door from the inside the pin comes up out the door card but then just goes back down  the door just won't open! i can't get in to see the doors internals without removing the inside panel thats got the window regulator and runners riveted on and thats a pain in the :censored: to get off. is my only hope of fixing this to remove that inner panel??

any ideas people..... feels like i'm banging my head against a brick wall right now :(

Remove the rear squab, the rear door card is only held on with screws behind the inside handle, then you got access to remove the rear panel, be tight for space boot do-able.

I've already removed the door card, its the inner metal part that I need to remove. How is this done?? Do you need to drill out the rivets as well as remove the bolts to get this inner metal part off??? How do you secure the window if the window regulator and runners are removed with the inner part of the door??

I tried doing this on my LC and it was just too tight to get the door panel off.

The door's central locking module has packed up - a common fault with VAG cars - the PCB solder joints crack:

http://devmodem.blogspot.com/2006/07/vw-mk4-golf-central-locking-problem.html

You could try this as a short-term fix:

You need two people. One to thump/thump/thump/thump/etc. the door handle on the outside hard without causing any damage. Don't *****-foot around, you have the 'shock' the module into working. Have the second person constantly pressing the unlock button on the front door as you're thumping and with a bit of luck it'll fire and unlock the door. That's how I did it.

Once door's open, whip off the interior panel and either remove the module to fix and refit it. Alternatively cut the blue wire in the door's loom to disable it. You can then lock/unlock the door manually from the inside BUT it will no longer be deadlocked and the alarm will indicate a fault (although the door will still be alarmed).

Good luck :) .

Well done - you did it as I was typing away. I only got as far as cutting the blue wire on my LC, so I can't help :( .

This guide will help:

Sorry to hi-jack the thread, I've the same problem with my rear door but fortunately (For now anyway) a sight shock and the door will open. How ever its beginning to do my head in.

What is it that needs to be repaired on the mechanism? how do you go about it? (Not the removal but the fix)

Cheers all.

well i've got the door open now :D
went out after work today, battered the door handle whilst my brother unlocked the doors and hey presto!!!!!!............... unlocked :D
now i've narrowed it doen to the central locking module i'll need to set about removing the inner panel.

do you need to replace the rivets or can you use something else?

i was gonna ask the same question....... do you have to re-rivet or can you used a nut / bolt arrangement??
