When i start my pd150 from cold, theres smoke which looks to be slightly blue along with steam/white smoke from the condensation. Ive only noticed this since having the full milltek system on. After its running for about 30seconds, the blueish smoke goes and its like normal. Also ii f you standing behind the car weither the engine is cold or hot, theres a very strong smell of fumes. You can also smell it if you sat in traffic on tickover. Im wondering whats causing this and if anyone else has any problems. Im thinking its over fuelling hence the smell of fumes. Also when cold, the engine hesitates slightly like if its misfiring, you can only just about hear it. Its done 82k miles and has a turbo back decatted non res milltek system with a ramair enclosed induction kit. I was thinking it maybe the turbo oil seals have gone or the MAF so i got the reading from it with the liquid gauge:

Tickover when warm - hovers around 280 mg/h
On full boost - hovers around 1230 mg/h

Are these reading correct?

I was also wondering if a remap would sort it out as im planning on this very soon when i get my 3" sfs tip.

Thanks all. Ashley.

Might be worth a quick search - I'm pretty sure I have read about this being fairly common cars with new exhausts fitted. Especially on the 150, which smokes anyway.

If you are really concerned take it back to wherever you got it done.

Not sure what effect that would have on the fuelling though - are you getting poor consumption?

Ah rite fair enough. If it was black smoke, i would be less worried, its just blueish which worries me. I may drop it back off at garage as see if they can see anything wrong. Fuel consumption is perfect. Im getting around 50mpg with mixed driving giving it some beans sometimes so thats seems fine, just the smell is very strong and you can feel it get into your chest if your looking for something in the boot, its even worse when engine is cold. I guess thats theres no cat, thats why it smells a fair bit and i didnt notice it with a cat on. I was using millers diesel power eco max stuff but thats smells horrible on its own so ive stopped using it now to see if thats what causes the smell but there still some in the tank so just need to do a few more fill ups before i can rule that out. I know when remapping they alter the fuel, air, etc... so it may just be off balance due to air filter and exhaust. But i dont really want it remapped if its not running properly if you get what i mean. Cheers.

I get ten seconds of blueish smoke at each startup as well, wouldn't worry too much about it, just keep an eye on the oil consumption. Its normal to top it up every now and then.

Also diesel need a few minutes to warn up, stalls pretty easy if really cold too.
Not sure why though, diesel pressure?

Oh, and mine smells a fair bit too, with stock system! as expected too, I guess.

I get a small amount of blue smoke on start up but after 10 seconds or so dissapears. Car runs absolutly fine so not to bothered. Keeping an eye on oil levels tho. Dont get paranoid as long as the car drives fine and you think its not to excessive then dont worry.

Turbo seals are worn mate, mine didnt smoke with standard system on fitted decat/downpipe cobra back system, smokes on startup, and if its ticking over blip the accelerator and get a cloud of blue smoke :( lol

Is yours a diesel or petrol though? I was thinking about the seals :( Any idea if its safe to remap or replace turbo seals first? Also, how much is it for the seals? Is it an easy job to do yourself or is it a fairly big job? Cheers.

If turbo seals are gone you are gonna be using oil. My yoke smoked like hell, very embarrassing, hesitant, misfiring. Changed to green temp sensor and that stopped a lot of it. It still stinks though, the smell you speak of. My egr was very blocked up along with inlet manifold. I cleaned it all out and now it sounds as if it's sticking. I can hear it clicking open and closed and the exhaust note changes when it does this, along with smoke. I thought my turbo seals were going, garage took a look at it when it was in getting a job done, they said it's definitely not seals in my case.

If you haven't changed the standard black temp sensor which was recalled a few years ago to the green one, which is cheap on ebay, I'd do this. I did this yesterday and it helped a lot. I noticed, with the black one in, that when i turned ignition on first thing in the morning, the plugs didn't stay on at all and that's prob why it smoked when it started. This morning they stayed on for a few second and far less smoke.222

Well its not using oil as ive just checked and the level is the same last time i check 2 weeks ago. Interested about the temp sensor, where is it located? Any pics? Also do you need to drain coolant/bleed after changing?

A link to the green temp sensor on ebay would be awesome aswell please mate. Thanks very much. Ashley.

Ive found 2 sensors and the price difference is a fair bit.

£2.40 - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360441632381
£12.99 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230645123950

Which one do i go for? Also do i need the 4 pin connection rounded? Cheers.

Mines petrol, its been smoking 3 weeks now on startup and when pulling away, blipping the accelerator, oil level hasnt noticeably dropped, and i couldnt get it mapped how it was, pointless really anyway lol

Fairly irrelevent then as ive got a diesel bud :D Thanks though.

Anyone shed some light on where the temp sensor is and which one of the 2 above? Thanks.

Temp sensor is on the RHS rear of the engine - to get access you need to pull out the air box and move the piping running past the maf.

Literally just disconnect sensor, connect the new sensor, then quickly pull the old sensor out the housing and stick the new one in straight away. If you are unlucky you will need to fish around for the rubber o ring, and you'll lose coolant.

I did mine a few weeks ago, really easy. Left it to run for a while afterwards, then topped up the next morning. Have a search for threads started by me, I posted one about this and it has several links and guides in it.
