Hi Guys,

I have had an update from the autoelectrics place.

They said theres a problem with the Multifunction Control Unit... Whatever that is.

He said theres options..

1) send it away to be fixed £200
2) order a new one in and have it programmed for the car £300.

GULP! What do I do?!

D

I wouldn't trust the autoelectrics place with something like that, but since you went there anyway and there is no point in paying even more money to have it checked at the dealership, I'd order a new unit and have it programmed for 300. I know that a 100 difference is a lot, but at the same time you're comparing between a brand new, never used unit and one that has been repaired and is most likely to fail again in the near future. I wouldn't risk it and just go for a new unit!

Yeah, I see what you mean, would be worth spending out on getting a new one in there.

Jeez and it was only booked in last week to see why the airbag light was on. Hopefully its connected!

:(

Well I have to say that I've never seen a faulty one, just me.

Airbag light will be the wiring under the seats, your auto electrician will probably tell you otherwise.

I'm begining to see a correlation between Naths. comment and the unfolding events.

I would want to pay a visit to the place that have your car and get them to show/demonstrate the fault and why they think the MFD is the fault.

Please make sure that if you go for it and have a new MFD fitted, you get the old "broken" one back in your hand too. After all, you own it and it would give you confidence that they are honest. Make sure you mention this before you go ahead with a new MFD, you never know they may suddenly find a cheaper fault.

I reckon they are loosening your belt in preparation to pulling your pants down. I'm just sayin'

All the wiring under both seats has been check and all seems ok..

I went over there earlier and they showed me that they have been testing individual parts behind the console as well. They suggested sending the part to be tested, if it comes back fine they will have to look at other solutions.

In other words they don't know.

How much do you owe them so far for not knowing?

Unless the wiring has been modified as per the vw TSB repair guide then it can still cause a fault.

If the fault is something like "N199 or N200 drivers/passenger airbag igniter upper or lower resistance limit exceeded" then the wiring is to blame.

This is the thing, when we did a scan there was never a fault code relating to the air bag. However I do wonder if my diagnostic tool only looked at enging/drive train stuff...

Does your auto electrician not have a better code reader? If they don't, how can they take on jobs to repair faults?

Sorry I meant my 3rd party diagnostic tool which I used before the ignition went.

They are currently unable to do a diagnostic using their tools as there is no power getting to the port/system.

I had an airbag error on the dashboard when I removed the seats in order to fit leather. I removed them by using VAG-COM and clearing the errors. There are tutorials on how to do it if your autoelectrician doesn't know how.

If the airbag light is on at any point on a vag vehicle then there will be a fault stored under address 15 for the airbags.

Main ingnition relay kills power to the can gateway that the diag plug uses...

Hiya, Nothing yet, still haven't received the part back from testing.

Ill post up some information when they get back to me.
