Hi, new to the forum, but I bought an Seat Ibiza 1.6 S

I loved how it handled itself during the testdrive, couldn't find any rust on it, and only had a slight dent in the door of the passenger side. It's from 1996, and from what I noticed it seemed like a clean, honest and reliable car.

However I would like to ask if there is anything I should check for. It will get a new checkup (in the Netherlands cars that age needs to be checked for safety every year). Sorry for my rather goofy looking first post, but as I said I"m still new to the forum heh.

Hello mate and welcome to the up and down world of having a Seat! Im not really sure about the 1.6 engine, one thing you want to check first is your pedal box... push your clutch pedal in slowly, does it creak or grind? if it does your box could be on the way out, look under your steering wheel to where the pedals are attached, that black frame they are attached to is your pedal box, look on the left where your clutch pedal is and check for breaks in the metal. My car is a 1999 model and I had to put a new box in last year. Apart from that ive had very little trouble with it, just check the usual stuff, Spark plugs, HT leads etc if everythings in order you should be OK, have fun!!

Thanks, the Clutch didn't creak or grind, when in the test drive we tested the clutch. We slowly pressing the pedal in to listen if we heared something, put it in third gear and handbrake and slowly releasing it. If your clutch is good then a car should stall, I little trick I learned to check for when buying second hand cars. During this thing it didn't creak once. BUt I'll check underneath for the pedal box and checking for creeks or breaks, thanks for the tip.

And Spark plugs are a given ofcourse on any car, I changed them on my Suzuki Swift 1.3 GS every year. (Yes that was my previous car which suprised me in how well it was built (Wasn't a Suzuki fan before the Swift).).

1.6 is about the best all round engine you can have so you've done well as there weren't many sold over here.

Give the throttle body a good clean and a the rest a general service and it should see you right for a few years. Only other thing to watch for is the usual rust areas - rear wheel arches, sills etc

Do they rust very easily? since that was the problem with my Suzuki Swift 1.3 GS from 1991. Those things rust like crazy.

Well there isn't any rust on it yet, so I might still be safe and overworying. The thing is with a Suzuki it starts in the sides underneath the doors and then the rest starts. GOes very fast.
