Just round the corner.
Hi All,

There's a hissing noise coming from the brake pedal. The brakes have an initial bite then don't really seem to slow the harder the pedal is pressed. Is the noise from the noise from the servo? or do all LCR's make this noise?

Mine does it but it's bad news the brake servo is shagged and it's pretty much an engine out jobas it's at the back and been told there about 200 quid to buy ,

'ello mate.

b4 spending that dough, brake fluid (esp fully synth) will make spongy brakes have harder initial bite and overall responsiveness and feel - no brainer really !! The oem rubber hoses can be sh@t so if you can fit, then that's about £100. Fundamental barake servo knowledge ain't mine mate, but let us know how you get on ;)

I have to admit, I'd tend to agree with Dan, but take Blue51's advice first. The only time I've heard hissing from my brake pedal is when the engine is off and the servo isn't operational. So if yours is doing it when the engine is running, then something isn't right.

As a trial, try pressing the pedal with the engine off to see if the sound and feel is the same.

I'm not sure what is meant by 'fully synth' brake fluid as I thought they were all synthetic. But that's just me being a ar5ewipe as usual! ;) But a fluid change might be worth trying, it's far easier than a servo change.

think the fully synth is like engine oil, a bit better but costlier. motul rbf 500 gets lots of mentions on here - when i asked the garage they offerred me fully synth instead so that's how i understood it, may be wrong though!

yep, if press brake with engine off is normal - it is a hydrallic system i believe

Cheers guys. There isn't a constant "hissing", I never noticed until last night when the mrs pointed it out.
If the pedal is depressed a few times the noise stops. I will have to have ago in another standard LCR to see if there are any major issues, and get a mechanic to have a look.

Dan how have you got on with this, i don't notice any difference in performance, the car that mark was talking about is mine now, but he never mentioned this problem when i bought the car initially!lol. Just found it on the search. Whats actually wrong with the servo to make this noise? Don't really want to fork out on a new servo!!lol

I thought all servo assisted brakes hissed when you're depressing the pedal but it should stop once the pedal has stopped moving. Every car I've owned has done this.

Mine did this exactly as you described, i had to get a new one which is about £140 it is a MOJOR PITA to fit, i did it myself you have to move the engine forward to get it out.

Phill, so just to confirm yours did it when your foot was off the pedal? Why is there a need to fit a new one of it is not affecting the braking?could the braking suddenly go or anything of the sort?

Also where did you get the part from?

Cheers

Yes it only made the noise when foot was of the pedal, it is the servo that gives you the braking power so it could fail, also i think you would fail an MOT with it like that.

Also, called TPS, £236! for the servo!!! Where did you get one for £140?!

I got mine from Dave at Sere he is listed in the dealers section i just checked my receipt and it wasn't £140 it was £125 :D
