Evening All,

I've been reading up on some reviews for the Civic Type-R and they sound really good. So, yesterday I took one for a test drive. It's so wierd driving a car that rev's up to 8200 RPM compared to my remapped TDI!! Anyway, I really like the car but the insurance group is 17!! In my opinion it shouldn't be that high! My FR has twice the torque and the Civic isn't that much quicker to 60. Done some quotes for insurance and it's quite frankly ridiculous! What are your opinions on the Type-R? Anyone else driven it? How did it compare to your Ibiza?? It's the styling I like on the Civic and the howl it makes when the V-tec kicks in.
Cheers,
Ross

If both cars are standard the Type R would murder the FR TDI both in a straight line and even more so around the twisties.

If the FR was remapped it would give the Type R a good run for its money especially off roundabouts etc when its in gear and on torque but the Type R is still the quicker car.

Sorry to piss on anybody's (admittedly slightly deluded) chips.

Just waiting for the "I've got 192bhp from my 130 on a standard turbo crowd" to come and boast about supposedly beating a type r.

Yeah I agree that the Type-R is a quicker car but does it justify group 17 insurance? This is stopping me from being able to get one!:( I don't do a lot of mileage so it doesn't matter too much to me that the TDI has better MPG. Ah wel, I still love the FR but just fancied a change to a high revving petrol!

apparently the previous shape Civic Type-R is a better drive all-round to the newer spaceship version. Might get a better deal on that and use the money saved on buying the car for insurance :)

Ah sorry I should have said. It was a 2004 plate I was trying out. I'm not keen on the new shape Civics.

i have drove both the new shape and old shape type r nd the older one i say by far is better.... its lighter and the new shape has a rear beam connecting the rear suspension where as the older one does not and its noticable! i think there noth great cars but i would go for the older shape, thing is every one goes on about there straight line speed but the standsrd ones only do (or the ones i have seen) 15.9-16.4 1/4 mile at pod which aint that great realy.....

yes it does, grp 17 is the norm for such a vehicle. Diesels are just cheap to insure. Get a Leon FR petrol or Golf GTI. Only group 14 insurance.

how old are you? What sort of quotes where you getting back?

Get a 20vt Cupra as the insurance is only group 16 :) My friend has a Type R and personally I don't like the handling much. My remapped Cupra is faster and has better brakes..plus you don't need to wait for it to warm up so you can use the VTEC and then have to rev it loads to get any torque. Loads of torque in the Cupra at all revs.

When i got my Cupra it was Gp 15. As for the type r, i think they are fantastic, a mate of mine has had an EP3 (older shape) and he now has an FN2 (new shape). I would say the older EP3 is a lot more hardcore but the FN2 is much more comfortable. Handling wise they will obliterate an Ibiza and standard vs standard they are faster than both petrol and diesel Cupras.

I used to have an CTR and can honestly say all I miss is the noise of the engine. If you got caught in the wrong gear out of v-tec then you would be playing catch up with diesels.

I had a race with my mate rolling start up to silly speeds and they couldnt get past me. Their civic has had k-pro too.

keep the Ibiza!

 Haha, as above std v std they arent in the same league, so why even bother. However a remapped PD130 driven correctly wouldnt have a problem keeping up with a Type R, from experience, several times. With several Type R's!

Besides, as also mentioned above, Type R 1/4 times arent anything special, 15.5+ ive never seen one lower.

Whilst I know a several PD130 mapped getting 14.7's 14.8's and 14.9's

Anyway, they are different cars all together so why people try and compare them I will never know. One does 50mpg, sounds like a tractor and once mapped would keep up, the other is a mid-life crisis car that screams like he wishes his wife did in bed when you hammer it.. fact ;)

Wel, when I was 17 I picked up 3 motoring convictions for driving my mums car whilst slightly drunk (daeoo matiz or all cars) and they're still giving me grief! The cheapest quote was £3500 3rd party f/t! Compared to what I'm paying now £1200 it's crazy! I'd be 21 when/if I buy the car.

reason the insurance is high is due to a number of factors.

the parts are, i imagine harder to attain or more expensive.

the car is more appealing to a theif

the insurer needs to think of the "type" of person who will buy that car. and lets be honest. people dont buy a type r so they can save fuel by not using (and abusing) the vtec!

my previous car was a lexus gs300 sport. the gs300 se was group 15, my sport was group 18!!!!!!!!! that was a 3.0 litre with team toyota europe's touch
the gs430 (4.3 V8 290bhp) was cheaper to insure in group 17:shrug:

Type R will run rings around an FR TDI - I had a 5 mile straight road sprint from 30 to top speed a while back and I just couldnt catch it - he wasnt gaining either mind you, conditions were wet so I didnt want to push too hard. Out of a roundabout I gained a good bit back but the Cupra dies in 6th gear around 115 - 120 as does the CTR. Mapped it would be advantage Cupra id think (on a straight)

Type R as said above will always kain a FR standard. Thing is, if you had the money you could make the CTR even better, my friend has his supercharged and well OMG lol! 280BHP and the sound of Vtec and Supercharger is unreal. Ive bin looking at quotes for a CTR myself. lowest i can get is 2800 with 6 points and a 7k crash in december.. :(

i know of someone round my area with a supersharged ctr and the money he has put intoit compared with the money i put into mine there is virtualy nothing in it at all! you have to spend mega bucks to get more power from the honda but the diesels or 1.8t motors are much more tunable for more sensible money... i know what i would prefer.....

:yep: 5 grand for a super charger? Wonder what you could do with that on a beeza? 350bhp?

Easy 350 bhp in the Ibiza. I know of a lad i went to school with who has a type r and the money he has spent on it is ridiculous 20k plus. I think the last rolling road it was on measured it around 450 bhp. from what i have heard it blew up though.
