Honest Reliability on FR PD 170

Okay, so I'm reading a lot of faults of late and it's got me a bit worried now. The car I want to last me 5 years ideally, but all of these stuff I'm reading is wondering if it's going to cost me a fortune.

So....for all you FR TDI drivers - what has happened with yours, mileage and costs involved?
 
oh and just to say before this thread gets into swing...

you are always going to hear issues on forums like this, people with no issues don't tend to shout up ! - also go to civinfo to look at how many issues there are with the new Civic despite it being a Honda !

in saying that I recently bought an FR and went petrol because I didn't want a DPF...

miss the mpg of a diesel but thats it !
 
Overall the Leon is quite reliable the weak point is the injectors and associated wiring loom and the DPF on the 170PD. You hear more about the faulty ones than the ok ones on a forum.

I would recommend getting a decent third party warranty however as these failures are costly ones although SEAT have offered goodwill on fully dealer serviced car's. Golf's, A3's and Octavia's with the same engine have had the same problems.

If it really worries you then the 140 is a better bet and suffers much less or pay a little more and go for the much more reliable CR engine 2009>.
 
Had ours since new in Nov 06 and it's now covered 85k miles. 78k in first three years and bugger all 18months.

It was my work car first three years and was driven hard but sensibly and full service all the way. In my time it had a new dpf, dpf sensor and an injector. The door module packed in which upsets the alarm and the interior fan stopped working. Both common faults for the earlier cars, since wife has had it two injectors gone, replaced by seat along with the forth and loom.

Passed all mots with no advisories all done by Seat which at this mileage is very good.

I would recommend one no problem, just go for as late a model as possible with full seat history.

There have been a lot of threads regarding injector issue but the trade aren't staying away from them, dealer offered over 7.5k for ours as a straight purchase so confidence and demand is there.

The issues I listed are the same for the equivalent VAG cars as well so it's look of the draw but a damn good car indeed.

I agree mate, you don't see people posting on here 'hello, I love my pd170 engine its fantastic'. It's usually people who have problems.

Fortunately I haven't had any problems with the car at all. I've had it since February and have done 8000 miles and have only had the dpf light on once, which is remarkable since I only travel ten miles to work.

Don't worry about it mate, its probably only a tiny percentage of people that have had problems with this engine.
 
Thanks guys, this is why I started this thread as everyone moan about there cars before they praise them.

So I wanted to hear real world issues and what stories you got with yours! Luckily I haven't had anything with 2k I done in mine since June - I do 35 - 40 miles a day so doubt I'll get the DPF light, most of them in 60+mph.
 
Every car is different and everyone drives different etc.
Don't worry just drive it I'm sure it will be great. I think most are.
Let's face it on forums you only hear of the bad ones or the ones that go wrong. On this forum alone I bet of all pd170 owners failure rate won't be 5%

Again the SPF thing is down to driving style, wife's journey to work is 6miles in 40mph traffic to work and stop start on the way home and no SPF light in 18months and it's a very rare blast down the motorway. As the saying goes **** happens, people forget cars are manufactured to tolerances and sometime it's odd combinations that can throw up an issue where as the main are all good.

Fisher I feel for u pal. My car ain't as bad as urs, but it's still been stuck in the seat dealers for a week an still no one has looked at mine, I will never ever use my local seat garage ever again
 
I was excited about picking my Leon FR up (see newbie section) but you are all just filling me with dread now :-(
 
I drove mine less than 200 miles an then it died.

I was looking at the astra si cdti wish I would have bought that now. I thought it been a vag it would be a cracking car, but not so far.

I think vag have let them selves down big time with the injectors an the dpf. Injector side more due to the fact the car just dies. Mine did at 75 in the outside lane of the motorway. I needed new pants

Seat uk know about these faults so do vosa but nothing seems to get done
 
Read any make of car forum and you'll think that the only reliable form of transport is either your feet or your pushbike.
I've had my Fiat Grande Punto for 2y9m, done 46k. It has been 100% faithful for me.

Just chill, look after the car properly and enjoy it.


Oh and remember, none of the above applies to Citroen :p
 
I think what spoils a car the most is a crap dealer.
By the sounds if things there is a few.
Anyone comparing vag to an astra is crazy. Faults cambelt failure egr inlet manifolds waterpumps and the list goes on. Vauxhall 1.9 and 2.0 cdti engines are fiat engines anyway.
Stick with vag the cars will shine soon enough.

Had a s line 2ltr tdi 05 plats 2 years ago, great car an the garage was great to, my local seat place is just being funny because I didn't buy the car from them.

The next closet place for seat was 70 miles away, if my brake down cover would have towed it there I would have been much happier.
 
It's shite when a dealer can ruin your ownership experience.
Let's face it whether it was bought there or not they are still getting paid.
