Is the diesel FR noisy and/or sluggish compared to the petrol FRs? Any stalling? (That's been my experience with the 1.6 golf diesel)

Can't comment on the petrol but l previously had a remapped FR pd170 and it's a much nicer place to be in, far more up-to-date and a very pleasant place to sit. Performance wise my mk2 was slightly quicker but l plan on buying the dtuk tuning box. The engine is much quieter and much more economical; can still get around 50mpg on backroads driving fairly quickly, great car you'll love it....also has very good breaks and handles really well

I want to low tax so it's a choice between the 1.4 and the 2.0 FRs for me. It's just my experiences with diesel haven't been that great. My last 2 cars were Golf 1.6 TDi SEs - the six series and the latest 7 series. Both in my experience sounded like Taxis (from the outside) and I found they both had a real tendency to stall at junctions (my driving maybe was a factor but nevertheless I frequently managed to stall them).
I've not managed to drive the 184 because they're pretty scarce at dealers round here.

I've managed to stall the demo car (FR 184) twice during a single test drive. I've had my FR 1.8 TSI for more than 7 months now and that has never happened so far. Maybe it's my driving skills or I am used too much to gasoline engines, who knows but I found it difficult to find a smooth bite point on the demo car.
Take your foot of the clutch the car pulls itself along?

I dont understand why a diesel would be more likely to stall, they have low down torque and if anything are less likely to stall than a petrol.
Im not a massive fan of diesel, but if you are torn between diesel and petrol than a derv is almost certainly for you.

got my FR 184 ST 10 weeks ago, and still in love. Phantom Black, Tech, winter, convenience, sound leather and sunroof. switched the 18" wheels for 17s as I wanted a slightly softer ride than I thought 18s would give. Dealer said I probably wouldn't have noticed, but they did it anyway. Just loving it. Engine/gearbox combination really sweet, sound is good, handles a treat.

I love my fr 184. Got just over 3000 miles on clock now. My mpg is poor though, about 38mpg. Granted its mainly around town (wife drives it daily) but even when we do a trip it may go up to mid 40's.
I know new cars take a while to "bed in" , but looking at some posts on here many seem to be getting better mpg..
Any thoughts?? It's going in to garage soon would they check anything??

I'm sure that can't be right, something must be wrong.
I'm nearly getting that mpg from my 1.8 tsi. I keep looking how people are finding the 184 diesel because that's what I was originally going to get. Way back in March last year when I put in my order the 184 was still not available and so I got the 1.8 petrol version instead.
I have no regrets though, as I love it. It runs much better than my previous 170 CR diesel FR. Much nicer to drive, seems much faster, lighter and more responsive. I used to get about 10 mpg more from my 170 CR than I'm getting from my 1.8 tsi and I thought the 184 was supposed to be even better.
