How fast/slow is the Ibiza Cupra ?

Race

Official acceleration numbers for the Cupra are pathetic. How can a Cupra tie the Golf V GTI in the quarter mile (not to mention falling behind badly afterwards) when is has a resonable power/weight ratio advantage ? I konw it's only a 5-speed,but still.

What I'm asking is:are these numbers corect ? How does the Cupra fare against 2 liter 200+ HP compacts in the real world ? What I'm lookin for is information from owners who have raced GTI's,Astra turbos etc.,both from a standing start and from a roll.

Also, how does a chipped Cupra stand against a chipped GTI/stock Astra OPC/Leon 2 Cupra etc. ? Since the power curve after the remap is very flat, the 5-speed widely spaced gearbox seems to be less of an issue in theory.
How much does a Cupra really weigh ? (official figures vary around 1200 kg)

The reason I'm asking is because I want to buy a new Cupra/FR.Most of it's compact rivals have obvious advantages over a small car (independent rear suspension, larger tracks and wheelbase,LSD's on some models) so they'll handle better. They all have more power too.I'm willing to stomac that since the Ibiza costs less, however if the weight advantage doesn't make is at least as fast in a straight line as the compacts then there's no point in buying it.

It's a difficult one, my old Cupra MK3 was Revo'd, and was very fast, a lot faster than my current MK4 Cupra, but then again, it should have been considered it was remapped.

The cupra is fast, it just feels refined, I don't think it will compete with the 200bhp+ hatches without a remap.

indeed, my brother has a mk5 gti and having driven that and a cupra tdi, the golf would piss all over it

however, the ibiza is about 5k cheaper, and a smaller car - a LCR is more comparable with the 200bhp crew surely?

i dunno about a remapped cupra though it would surely be fun ;)

Well i have a 6 month old cupra 20v thats standard and my best mate has a 1 year old Astra vxr thats also standard. 0-60 wise they are close but the astra pips it just! on the move tho the astra is long gone no chance of keeping up!!

The 225PS Focus ST is the only car i've ever raced in my petrol cupra. From a standing start, the beezer can hold it's own against the ST until about 70-80 MPH, then the ST pulls away.

If the ST is already moving (at say 60 MPH) and he nails it as he sees the beezer approaching, you don't stand a chance, as mid-gear acceleration is very fast in comparisson.

You'll stand a better chance against hot hatches from the same time as the cupra was created. Cars like the Clio 182 or Fiesta ST for example - Just take them on in a straight line tho, because the beezer does not corner as well as the competition, as the mechanics that go into a beezer are ancient!

well standard the cupras are quick but get breathless when the speed gets higher but once remapped this sorts this out . mine 1.8t is remapped so 210bhpish, I have raced many cars, integra type r, civic type r, clio 182,peugeot 306 gti-6. I beat all of them by a good margin and I think the gap would have kept getting bigger the faster I got. but this is to be expected as I have more power, more torque and weigh the same. I had a blast with an astra vxr whoI was following and was very disapointed in the astra as I had to back off and he was really going for it from the noise of the car.
An old scooby RB5 wanted to have a play the other day, im sure that would have been a good race but unfortunately he turned off before we got a chance.

I think the cupras are very understated cars and once remapped are very rapid cars.

I think if your thinking of getting one you wont be disappointed. Even after 1 year of ownership I still get an adrenaline rush from the drive. something I never got from my previous cars which were a clio 172, subaru impreza and an MR2

the only downside is the bland interior. I had a look at the new civic type r today which I think I have fallen in love with. it just looks amazing inside and out. I know it wouldn't be as quick as mine but a few tasteful mods would sort that out.

Baring in mind that you would be saving £5K+ over the other cars you've mentioned, why not invest in a decent set of coilover's as that will improve the ibiza's handling somewhat and then you can get a remap aswell and probably still save over £4K+ compared to the others.
