How many bolts to remove the Subframe?

Unfortunately being an owner of a 1.2 AZQ engine the sump has gotten in the way of being able to remove the wishbone bolt on the drivers side.

I've come to the conclusion that I would prefer to lower the subframe from the body than remove the sump as I've just had the car freshly serviced by the stealers (could of done it myself, but only cost be £90 for a full service :D).

So my question is, is it only 6 bolts that hold the sub frame to the body?

cheers

If your doing console bushes its the same number of bolts anyhow. Just the two 13mm at the back then the 4 18mm main bolts plus four 16mm steering rack bolts and the dog bone 16mm bolts into the gearbox.

You will have to drop the exhaust off though but no biggy.

I only need to drop it down by an inch, think i could just lower the subframe with the bolts partially unthreaded? Theres atleast an 1" gap between the exhaust & the subframe.

Seems I've managed to lower the subframe enough to get the wishbone bolt out :D

Got the cupra bush pressed in also, so just some re assembly, a new spring to be fitted and I should be laughing. Never speak too soon though. haha

I fitted the other side a week or so ago :p

I just replaced what was broken, but now the other side is haggard. Obviously I should of done both at the same time, but unfortunately I wasn't able to due to other commitments.

ash, which cupra bushes did you get? i have a 1.2 AZQ and want to replace the bushes, but people talk about 16mm and 18mm this that and the other! as you can tell im not too mechanically minded. will it be an expensive job for my garage to do? your advice would be greatly appreciated. cheers mate.

If your not very mechanically minded/technical then I would advise to get a garage to fit the rear bushes on the front suspension. The problem with the 1.2 AZQ engine as i found out & read later is that the oil sump gets in the way in removing one of the bolts on the drivers side. The only way of getting round this is by removing the subframe.

Any seat dealer should be able to supply you the cupra bushes. Under £20 for the pair (both sides). The ones you've probably got fitted currently are the old style bushes which are poorly designed in comparison to the cupra ones.

The 16mm / 18mm which you mention I believe your getting mixed up with the Anti Roll Bar (ARB) bushes. You can upgrade these also if you want, but personally I didn't see the point if I'm honest. Its only a 1.2 at the end of the day, no Cupra monster! haha

I can't believe it would cost you a fortune to get done by a garage, also takes the agro/chances of a costly mistake happening if your inexperienced. Myself personally fancied a challange & I had seen enough guides to convince me to do it myself :)

Hope this helps.

yer it was anti roll stuff! cheers ash yer it does really help. will my local village garage be able to do it for me? no "specialist equiptment needed or anything? i imagine its more expensive to get it done at a seat garage. these guys are only 25 an hour labour and do a good job. and one more question if i may?! the rear suspension, what do you change that to? sometimes going over speed bumps it creaks alomost like a squeek at first i thought it was the rear seats not folded down properly. cheers for your help.

Gaz

p.s i wish it was a cupra beast :p

Well they will need a press to fit the new bushes, but apart from that everything else uses normal tools, nothing too specialist.

It could be that the bushes are gone on the rear or the shock absorbers need replacing. There's so many variables to consider that the squeak could becoming from anywhere. Some times a bit of grease might sort out the annoying sound.
