Turn off the ABS and the airbags will work just once only very soon after that.

Might as well. As we've learnt from playing Need for Speed and Gran Turismo, using other cars and solid objects is a more effective way of cornering, and doesn't damage the car

Ahh yes, the excellent driving engine that is Need For Speed. I think we can all take a page out of the NFS book when it comes to driving.

Not that you can react faster, I don't think thats the intended message, but the pulsing of the ABS can be VERY disconcerting and off putting when you need feedback from the pedals most. I have ABS on my van. When it kicks in, the natural impulse is to let off the pedal and press again...as we were always taught. This doesn't work on my van though. (it is french by the way ) Instead, it requires you to push harder on the brake pedal, and you have to hope the technology works... Just a personal preference, but I don't like that dead feeling. Fills you with the worst kind of panic....

I suppose it really does focus you into accepting "it" has not gone according to plan and the car's systems are doing their best to save the situation.

I don't think that the Bosch quote really addresses the issue here as it implies that locked wheels will end up building a dam of snow or gravel in front of the wheels and in doing so will assist in stopping it better than ABS will - I'd reckon that all of us could count on one hand when that was the true case. I'd say that fitting winter tyres or keeping off the roads in inclement conditions is the way forward, if you are in truth a "smart and wise capable" driver you will know all this, if you need to be able to move about freely regardless of road conditions you need to buy a 4X4 and fit that with a full set of winter tyres - and leave the Ibiza at home until conditions improve.
