Howdy, Just bought a GTi :)

Alrite chaps,

I just picked up mysef a copper 97 plate 2l 16v GTi and am looking to tidy it up. It was a bargain and as such needs a few tweeks to get it spot on.

Coming from a mk2 Golf I eyed up the potential to use this as a donor car, but the bodywork is that sound im going to smarten it and run it for the foreseeable future.

Ill pop some pictures up later on.

So first problem. The rubber boot has split behind the engine that goes through the bulkhead up the steering column. Ive searched on ebay for "ibiza steering boot" but there seems to be a few to choose from.. could any one point me in the right direction? Mine has PAS btw.

Secondly it came on 17" TSW allows but without the locking wheel nut. I cant add my rear spacers, coilovers, change the breaks etc.. without this. Is there a way around it?

and lastly (for now...) The handbrake needs tightening. I have a mechanic mate but hate looking like a dunce and asking him easy questions - similar to asking questions on here I should search for first any ideas?

I dunno, mine has just blown something out on the exhaust.

A slow day on the boards for mk2 owners so be patient and some people will be along to help soon I bet.

Hammer a socket over ya lock in wheelnut an that should see you rite... Part from that im useless... Oh "HIIIIII"

or take a look at some "locking nut removal sockets"

they have reverse thread, so when you hammer on, and loosen the wheel, it digs in and loosens the nut, just had to do it on mine, as i lost the key (facepalm lol)

nice one chaps, I was told this is the place to go. Any advice on the steering boot? The noise is annoying as hell.

Also, my clutch is literally on the floor. I bet about an inch off max. What will solve this?

handbrake is adjustable under the handbrake cover. just tighten it up with spanner.

as for that boot. it will most likely be a dealer part as its more of a dust cover than a boot.

Welcome to the wonders of mk2 ownership. .

The clutch issue will either be the cable as Suj said or the pedal box as Ollie said. If you search there is plenty of information/pictures about the pedal box.

i too came from the world of the mk2 golf but only to a lowly 8v GTI

Literally have about 4 sets of rims that would 'kill' a mk2 at the moment, but no car.

Do now have to raddo's, so really can't moan too much.

There was just something that was so perfect about a mk 2 though.
Maybe get myself a new one eventually, depends if I see a solid one for cheapo though

The clutch is not too stiff but it needs to be on the floor for it to get a gear. not so much pootling about town, but when giving it the beans. Ill have a look into the pedal box problems though.
