hi there, firstly im new here and not the most clued up but hopefully i can describe this well enough for you all.already learning a lot from reading on this forum!

i have a 51' leon cupra with a hybrid turbo, front mount, forge pipes and dump valve etc and tonight driving home on the motor way there was a pop from my engine, sounded almost like a pipe blowing off? there is stil some boost, the gauge goes about half way round before it stops and if i let the revs pick up there is a restriction like you are forcing the car into too low a gear. i only let this happen once because i didn't want to make the problem worse if possible so i don't know what revs this happened at. I've also noticed over the last couple of days the exhaust was popping and banging a bit more than usual like the decat pipe is back in but this was removed for a sports cat a couple weeks ago for its mot, im not sure if that has anything to do with the problem?

sorry its a pretty basic explanation of whats going on here but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

thanks very much, james.

Well have you checked all the pipes? You've got the symptoms of a pipe off, the engine is chucking in the fuel for the amount of air metered but that air is escaping causing over fuelling which gives your exhaust pops.
I would check all your boost pipes and joins.

thanks very much for the reply. this happened last night in the dark, had a quick look under the bonnet but didn't have a strong enough torch to see much. just going out to have a look now, and I'll reply back with any news.

thanks again for the quick reply, james.

been out and couldnt find any pipes off anywhere. took it a drive and everything was fine. anybody got and advice for whats happened? could the MAF sensor be giving a wrong reading causing it to over fuel and put the turbo into limp mode? last night i didnt turn the car off and on when it happened i just came straight home, so when i turned it on this morning has something reset its self?

this is just a guess to be honest if someone could point me in the right direction i would be very greatful.

many thanks, james.

James.
It sounds like something put you into limp mode like you've said buybi would be a little worried about the pop you heard, your best bet is to get the car hooked up to vagcom there is a section on the fourm for vagcom requests and you can also mention your location in her and someone might be nearby to help ;)

But anyway you need to have here scanned to see if theres any underlying problems, when car goes into limp its to protect the engine and turbo so something must of happened for it to hit limp mode ;)

a wee update, i went to seditas cars where all the tuning has been done to the car and he plugged the vagcom in for free. the outcome is i need a boost control solenoid and an ignition coil, which explains the backfire. with it being the weekend ill need to wait till monday to get the new parts but its a happy ending. two common problems that are easily fixed so not to worry. thanks for the help lads!

james.

So you need an N75 valve and a coil pack,i did wonder if the pop was one of them popping up off the plug (its known to happen) so 1st check if they are all seated correctly.

I don't think you'd get a pop with a coil pack coming off the plug. What has been known is for the spark plugs to blow out the head, with the coil attached - that might make some noise!
But it can't be that as it was ok the following day.
If a coil packs breaking down under load/heat then that cylinder will still be getting fuel but no spark so the fuel goes into the exhaust and ignites there, causing the pop/bang.

I'll change the spark plug at the same time as the coil pack just to be on the safe side. it's not blown out with the spark plug everything is in tact and tight. I'm pretty annoyed I need to wait till Monday to get parts, but that's just the way it is I suppose. hopefully ingrams have an N75 instock, and dingbro is just down from my work so was going to get a bosh coil pack from there.

Quick update, got the coil pack yesterday. It was the number 1 i was to put it in, drivers side is that correct? the popping still seems to be happening and i haven't noticed any difference. being it pay day tomorrow i only had enough money for the coil pack and not a spark plug aswell, could the spark plug be the problem? Ordered an N75 through work that will be in tomorrow.

Cheers, James.
