Due to unfavourable economic circumstances (I am now totally skint) I am having to sell my beloved Leon Cupra and buy a slightly older car for a while. I am possibly about to buy an X reg Ibiza Chill 1.4. It only has a tape player at the moment but I was wondering how easy it is to change the manufacturers head unit for a CD player from somewhere like Halfords?

I know that on some newer cars it is not easy to get rid of the manufacturers head unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I just don't own tapes any more so a tape player would not be good!

In addition to this does anyone know how easy it is to install a CD autochanger in the boot and use it with the head unit? I know that my brother has done this with his mark2 Ibiza Cupra but the wiring was already there for it. I wouldn't imagine that its the same for the Chill!

chances are the wiring will be there, just get an original cd changer 2nd hand cheap and plug it it, get it riv nutted into the correct holes in the wheel arch too.

Cant say im sure won what stereo the chill has but its likely it will have the changer controls so its just a case of plugging in the changer in the boot, this is what i did. if it doesnt have the controls, ie its a low spec radio then your looking at fitting an after market head unit below the steering wheel as the mk3 has an all in one radio and heater control dash.

ipod and transmitter mate.......i read on this forum that there was a company in spain that adjusted the plate that the stereo is in but you have to send it all away and cost about 120 quid, do a search on the forums dude, there is plenty about it, if your skint its not looking good, some people have mounted an after market stereo in the air vents at the top of the dash or under the steering wheel where the log book should go, ive looked into this problem alot but it seems you will have to custom make a place for an after market stereo, or like i have done.....ipod nano and a radio transmitter, works fine with me + better than a cd player as it holds about 20 - 30 times more than a 6 disc changer........i got this one for the nano as no wires very sleek and looks the biz!

hope that helps, i recon if your not going to have it for too long this is the best option, then you can carry on listening when you leave your car which you cant with a multi changer! :)

All the wiring was there in mine for my Sony changer to go straight in (it runs down the left side of the car all the way to the boot), I had a word with a few companies about changing the head unit but it sounded like it was gunna be a major job and it would cost a pretty penny. I am selling my 10 Disc changer on here when the admins check my post and put it up, so if you want a second hand one.
