A problem i have is stopping the front wheels from spinning but that may have something to do with a heavy foot.

Toyo proxies mate in the dry they grip after only a little spin in the wet though its mental mad i can have them spinning when i am going into third. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT

As I said in an earlier post - there's actually a hell of a lot more grip to play with than is immediately apparent. There's plenty of warning that you're approaching the limit, and if you do push too hard, bottle it and lift off, the tail breaks nice and progressively - particularly if you add a couple of psi to the "book" rear tyre pressures. No spacers on mine as I quite like the slightly lively rear end. I'm running Koni dampers with Vogtland springs, and also a set of Cupra 20vT wheels with 195/45R16 Yokohama A539's.

With a bit of familiarity and a bit of commitment it's a car that can really be hussled along at far greater pace on the twisties than the numbers on the spec sheet might suggest - and I find you can return pretty respectable economy even whilst "making good progress" on a B road blast - mid to high 30's sort of respectable. Great fun, and I still get a lot of enjoyment from mine, which i've owned from new - shame i'm overseas at the moment and missing out on the road rally season.

As for performance at 90+, yep, that's true enough but how often is it really a concern (officer)?

Very true. Coming from the 1.4 version, the 8v felt a lot more sure footed, and heavier, but it soon feels lite on it's feet again after a month of properly getting used to it (or 1 track day session). The limit is deceptive certainly, but once found (and with good enough tyres to be confident), superbly balanced, especially compared to the 16v as standard.

I had a *moment* the other night follow a friend. Dropped to 3rd on B roads around a long sweaping open bend (was thinkin of getting a run-up on him as it developes into a long straight) when the back started coming round slowly as I lifted off very slightly (55mph?). Slow step out, corrected slowly and snapped back straight - echo'in last comments.

I've gone off on one ....just drive the bloody thing lol

Very true, in the wet / damp, quite tricky to do a full 10mile journey to work without spinning them at least once lol

As for 90 ...4th and 5th aren't great gears, but then it's only ~125bhp you gotta remember, and very asmatic.

I got my copper coloured 8v off autotrader 6month ago. It came with 52k and the history read like a pure enthuiasts dream, everything was done/looked after. I've now put 8k on it. Replaced and serviced a fair few bits and ive not regretted buying it one bit.

Unfortunately though it seems I might have to sell it and move onto something a little more economical like a lupo tdi. Just my circumstances though.... I'm going to miss the old beast if I do change cars they really are a hard to beat package for the cost.

I had the same decision to make when i bought my ibiza but the fact that saxo's are everywhere swung it for me and afew more things. But great car with lots of potential for modding etc
