Hey All,

So recently got my first car, which happens to me a 2012 ibiza 1.4 Copa (Win) from a scrap yard, light front and back damage, stolen recovery, now although the damage is light for what it is, the airbags were deployed in the accident, meaning the dash needs replacing :/

And i know, this is apparently one of the hardest and most awkward/ annoying tasks to complete but i have 2 weeks holiday from work booked, the car being delivered tuesday and having paid £3400 for it we can afford to pay atleast £2k on repairs... (Although everything to repair it has come to around £1500) due to the 8k miles and £8.5k resale value.... :)

So what i was hoping for was any advice on replacing the dashboard, and guides tips and tricks if anyone could share?

Im aware its likely it wont fit as it did from the factory, woll have shakes and rattles etc but its the price im willing to pay considering its a first car!

If anyone has done this before or knows where to start i'd be grateful for their advice, i have schematics of the dashboard and how it goes in which i will attatch to the thread for future readers but its easier said than done on a picture :D

Thanks Guys!
Curtis

Steering wheel off, stereo out, remove seats for access

Then remove everything you can see/feel and eventually it'll come out

They're nowhere near as frightening as people make out.

Thanks for the replies guys their really encouraging! :) was going to pull the seats out anyway for access and changing the seatbelts so hopefully it wont be too frustrating.

Thanks for the link nightflight that was the one i was going by to see where everythings comming off :D onlynthingnis lnowing the order its comming off etc, ill have to spend sometime scamning over it today and see if there could be any problems with it,

Cheers guys! Any more tips and advice is welcome ;)

Some random advice from when I took my gf's dash apart...
Take pictures everything as you go along. Have lots of little sealy bags and a sharpie to hand, put each little "group" of screws in a separate bag and write on it clearly where they came from (and if a torx or bolt what size socket)
If it needs more than a firm tug you've missed one, and don't tug too far as the one you go to rip off will have some wire connected to it!
Take your time, undo everything. Have a beer or two in the fridge chilling.
And most importantly... Do it on a day when your local dealership is open so you can nip in and pick up spare clips and stuff when you inevitably break them!
(says he currently sat with his rear bumper off the car wishing he'd taken a day off work and done it during the week!)

Thanks nightflight thats some real helpful stuff! :) was thinking if it all goes wellenough ill write up a pictured guide for anyone else looking to do the same, ill be sure to keep note of everything aswell incase i do write a guide up as it will hopefully help a few people, will be sure to let you know how it goes! Hope you sorted the bumper out without too many problems, hope the weather wasnt too bad for you whilst doing it to (have had foot high floods where i currrently am!)

Be interesting to see how you get on. Sounds like a bit of a bargain either way! Is it a Cat C/ Cat D or unrecorded?

Have you considered just replacing the two air bags. The centre part of steering wheel comes with air bag in it already and the other one will need the air bag replacing too. Where it's cut through the passager dash panel, you could replace the air bag/go with out one and fill/ cover the hole and re upholster the panel if that makes sense. You will just be paying for the driver air bag, some upholstery material and glue, would need a staple gun to if your repairing the hole or some screws if youbwant to go without and some 2mm aluminum sheeting

You could then use the same material to do your doorcards. Let's face it the standard ones look rubish

There might be implications come MOT time if you start using staples in or around an airbag.

It will be astheticly pleasing but if it causes the airbag deployment to malfunction then someone could get really hurt.

The dash boards are designed to split in a certain way to direct the airbag in the direction of the passenger.

When I recovered my dash there were no scores in the original rubber panel outside or inside, the airbag seemed to have a sharp rectangular frame around it which I thought at the time gets forced through the rubber allowing the bag income through the centre.

Is passenger air bag needed for mot then?

Due to the silly new rules if it had one from the factory and its been removed then technically it fails.

That advice from lucifer666 is totally ridiculous! You can't just not bother having the airbag FFS. These things are important and there to serve a purpose in the event of an accident. Having the airbag could be the difference between life and death in a crash.

It is 100% critical they get restored to OEM standard otherwise the car should be off the road permanently.

If you look back at what I said I didn't advise to not replace the air bag, it's just one option available to him and that's why people come on forums, to look at all angles, he is a big boy and can make his own mind up for himself.

Personally I wouldn't leave it out of my car.

I knew what you were getting at with your previous posts.
