Exactly Gooner mike. I was noyt wrong, this was just when it was more of a difference, and the models I prob choose wern't the best comparison :D

I am loving the 1.8T but its not all about the MPG with it! You can get decent MPG if you drive like a granny but then... where is the fun in that? What makes the biggest difference to me is the price of petrol... now 85.9p at my local garage compared to the huge prices it got to last year!

Tried working out the MPG manually yet? You'll be surprised at what you get with the 1.8T!

Done it twice and averaged 36MPG!

25mpg is 15.6ppm (petrol)
40mpg is 11.0ppm (diesel)

So in the diesel you're 'saving' 4.6ppm at these fuel consumption rates.

So If my maths is correct a 40mpg diesel car vs a 25mpg petrol car over 20k miles will save you a grand

I reckon a diesel car is normally £1700 extra to buy if you buy a year old one.

factor in the extra tax on a petrol car for a year (£100)

I reckon you need to be doing 25k miles a year to make a derv equal it's petrol equivalent. anyone care to add to this.

Averaging 33mpg overall at the moment! Goes up slightly in the hotter months but not by much... Keep and eye on it because I do a lot of miles so makes a difference on how I drive it.

But once you have paid for it... you've paid for it, so the second year is cheaper and third etc. My head hurts

I think the wee computer in the dash is either being optomistic, or lying half the time!

I think it's just ~25k in the lifetime you expect to own the car rather than per year.

I think you're right, My Ibiza will be replaced at around 25k (5 yrs) It's about 3.5 yrs old now so I think I made the right choice. My mk3 was less, 17k in 5 yrs.

Still waiting to see what the mk5 offers

even with this petrol vs deisel thing going on... u can have so much more fun with a deisel if u want to for practicly the same price! i sold my mk2 leon as the fuel in that was crap! was putting £60 in and only just getting 300 out of the tank! now my golf £50 in and getting 300 but im ragging the hell out of it and having so much fun at the same time! now if i was driving more normal i would easily see 450 (becasue the roads i drive) but with alot less fun id rather pay an extra £25 and have more fun, but in my leon i was not having half as much fun as i am now! plus deisels hold there value alot more to! youll see when u sell your petrol like i did!

Mate, this Ibiza is not my first car, I have been driving nearly 21 years and I have had both diesel and petrol cars. In fact at the moment I own and drive both. The other one is a 150 CDTI 2007 Astra on 63k miles so far.

yeah, you're not doing enough miles (based on these sums) to need a diesel 'fun' car nathwarr - to be honest since I got my latest car, I've wondered about getting something far more uneconomical due to doing similarly low miles (because we have a weisel as well)

:)Gotta be from an auction/finance repo.Way,way below book.
I might even consider one at that price.;)

Thats what I was thinking no way is that from a dealer, even our demo with 4k on the clock isn't that cheep!

Well Fr Leon 2.0 petrol and the 2.0 tdi there is only like £400 in it to buy one new, cheeper to tax than the petrol hold there value better also
