Hi

My X reg ibiza 1.4 is very poorly:( please help.

I noticed a growing patch of oil outside my house. Popped my bonnet and discovered that the right side of the engine compartment is covered with oil and the oil level seriously low. The oil has leaked from the top of the engine beneath the plastic cover holding the air filters. The left side of engine near the alternator and air filter are clean.

I have got a pic of it but I couldnt work out how to insert it, insert image didnt seem to work.

The breather pipe from the engine entering the filter on the right had popped off and was covered in oil. I think that this pipe may be the source of the oil, when I took the filter cover apart the right hand filter was contaminated with oil. There was a load of yellow mustard residue in the pipe that enters the filter on the left which I cleaned out.
Not sure if it is of any relevance or not, but the pipe in the centre was split but I have replaced this now. The split pipe came out of a sensor or something located in front of air intake after the filter.

I’ve topped up my oil and cleaned as much of the spilt oil off the engine. For the time being I’m just going to keep an eye on it.

Can anyone comment on whether the oil is likely to have come out of the suspect pipe? Should there even be oil this pipe?

Any other ideas what I can do to fix it? Are there any other likely places where the oil could have leaked from?

Does anyone know what the item where split pipe is/does?

Thanks in advance.

Martin.

To put up a picture goto photobucket or something and upload it there then paste the link here.

Huge amounts of oil shouldnt come out of the breather pipe really.(btw its an oil breather pipe)

Although it sounds like it was blocked up which would result in the mustardy goop. There wasn't any in the filler cap was there?

Hi,

Cheers for the reply. Have stuck a picture on photobucket

. fingers crossed it is actually there.

No there wasn't any goop in the filler cap, just in the pipe marked in the picture.

So is it not normal for a significant amount of oil to be in this pipe? I'm guessing that the amount of oil in the pipe caused it to pop off as the pressure built up at the airfilter valve? Could the amount of oil in the pipe indicate a more serious problem?

Thanks again,

Martin.

Cheers, i'm keeping a beady eye on it at the moment.

I dont seem to be loosing any more oil at the moment, but fingers and toes crossed.

digging up this thread as it seems like the exact same problem i have...

can anybody shed any light on the problem? I have a cone filter and breather pipe filter instead of the airbox this member.

Have you got a patch under your car as well?

If not it is normal for you to loose oil because you have a filter, hence why people fit oil catch cans. When you have your standard airbox on, the breather pipe connects to that, and recurculates. And now you just have basicly blocked off the oil from recurculating and therefore has nowhere to go apart from dissapear.

yes Josh i noticed a patch on the drive last night. And i have residue all around the base of the filter and in the filter etc and dripping down the back.

Took the filter off and cleaned it through last night. But guessing the problem will just arise again. I have a picture of my set up if this would help.

***Update, just checked outside where i have parked at work in a few different spaces today, and a few specks of oil in each place, where i have parked after using the car

Yeh basically when i looked yesterday, all around the main filter around the intake hole shown in the above photo was covered in oil, and it had then dripped down and around etc.

I took the main filter off and cleaned it, as it was lined with oil, have not taken the breather filter off to check yet.

Here is a photo of my setup, and the oil leak seems to be around the main filter, and looks basically the same as the picture above but with more residue around the intake hole

yes pretty sure mate, as i said the filter has been on for more than a year and more than 10,000 miles for certain. This is the first time i've had this problem. Is a catch tank something worth investing in anyway? Although reading through this thread again it seems the exact same issue bacause of the vaccuum pipe having oil in it as well etc

Oil Leak on 1.4 cool/s in airbox and around

Hi I have had a similar problem when it first originated i took it to a garage adn they cleaned it up fitted a new air filter and a new, i think it was called a breather box or second airbox on the back of the engine which then connects to teh main airbox which was filled with yellow gunk which is aparently oil contaminated by water adn the problem went for about 10000 miles and has now come back and i would like to know more on how i can solve it?

Thanks Tom
