because the motor has high mileage and iv not done the internals they kept boost at 1.4bar dropping to 1.2 at 7000rpm to protect the engine ( playing it safe ) . Yes it could give more but lets not take everythung to the max or trouble will follow. It has anyway as im on a go slow at the mo as iv broken the water pump ( crapy plastic thing ) so shes back at jbs mon morning for a new metal pump and belt change ( 320 quid ) cos at the mo iv got to drive sub 3000rpm or the temp goes to 120 and takes 5mins to drop.

you sure you want to run the risk of a long journey with a fecked water pump?????

So over 320bhp you'd recommend doing the internals on the VF34?
Would you say the same for the garret equilvelant or is it just really about the amount of bhp being produced?

I'm new to the Big Turbo's and am looking into conversions a the minute for my ibiza so any info would be appreciated.

2 things here..
VF34 and bearing reliability
Engine internals vs boost and torque you expect to extract from it.

Bill, is there any options for uprating the bearings to ''race'' items similar to what turbo dynamics offer for a lot of the garrett range, or have you never bothered with anything like this on the IHI?

My understanding of IHI from what Bill has posted before is that even if the bearings dont go the exhaust housing will warp anyway when pushed hard.

On a race track yeah, but sensible boost on the road and all sould be fine so I've been lead to believe.

nope.
not aware of anything uprated on the IHI... very small shaft.. small bearings, low inertia which is nice, but overspeed also, which is'nt nice.

I have uprated bearings in my new garrett.

I have 6 housings which would confirm, the IHI P18/P20 housings will warp when pushed hard. (not good with heat compared to other makes like Mitsi/garrett/greddy for example)
Keep it sensible boost and things will last longer - thats the point being made.
