from what others have said, they are not a great turbo to be taking apart. Not sure you would be giving it hybrid treatment, but certianly a refurb

I am always very sceptical about 2nd hand (which I presume it is) high performance turbo

where has or what has it come off, and how much are you paying for it?

buying a cheap IHI turbo is just the start of a big cost.......have you got the other supporting mods? are you going to peg the power to save on internals, or going the full monty? where and who will be fitting/mapping? lots to think about....

unless doing the work yourself, you are looking at 4k easily without internals....and at least 8k with internals

hybrid or at least a refurb I would suspect would at least be around £500

EDIT: not sure as just seen on your signature, but does a twin pass intercooler cope with big power?

its come off my mates subaru impreza witch was running 1.2 bar of boost, he said it needs new oil seals and could do with a refurb, he said i can have it for £40, my twin pass fmic can support 450bhp and standard internals can support approx 350bhp and i want to see 330-340bhp at the fly is it possible with that turbo?

its not just the oil seals, you need to check for hairline cracks etc in the exhaust housing and any play in the shaft

yes standard internals can cope to 350, but I would not want to go any further than 330bhp IMO

I dont know how clued up you are on this, so please dont take offense like I am talking to you like an idiot, but you are aware of the cost and other supporting modifcations you need? i.e. you have done a lot of research into this.

I made this mistake once, and soon realised the work and cost required to run this sort of power

also, what is the mileage on your car?

have you considered going down the hybrid k03s route?

thought abought the k03s hybrid but im only gunna get a max of 270ish bhp at the fly as i want around 260-280ish at the wheels

your just talking about "numbers" though

it is how it drives on the road is the important thing

remember the VF wont be on full boost till at least 3500, as where the hybrid k03s will be on full boost by around 2800 and will continue till around 6500, which makes a good driveable road car

I would suggest looking at what driving style suits you instead of chasing figures.....:)

so you are basing the whole build and setup, because of what power your friends cars are pushing.......

A big turbo Leon will walk all over a tuned ST, any day of the week. You can take about 100bhp worth of transmission losses away from the 2 scoobys also. A hybrid K03s would quite happily deal with any of the cars you speak of in my opinion. Your 1.8T engine is in a different league to any of them. The 20 valve head ensures far greater flexibility than the Subaru or Volvo (in the Focus ST) engines can manage, so long as you don't hamstring it with a dirty big turbo that isn't on full boost until 4k rpm.

The mythical 350bhp breaking point of the standard internals is also complete nonsense, 350lbs/ft of torque is where I'd consider changing the rods. A properly mapped 1.8T on a hybrid K03s turbo with Water Methanol Injection will be a very flexible and very fast car. Reliability will be much better than IHI or GT series turbos can offer.

this makes for very interesting reading as i have considered upgrading the turbo on my LCR. well not so much considered but more wondered what is involved..ie other mods that need doing, cost, end result and indeed what turbo is best?

1. what turbo is it on a standard LCR?

2. what are the options to upgrade to?

3. other than FMIC and another remap is there anything else i would need to do or is it case of bolting the new turbo in place of the old one?

excuse me if im interupting or if i should have started a new thread:)

a search will help you there chief, this has been covered multiple times

in terms of reliability, and a fast road going car, this is the route I am going down now

if you dont know much about the IHI route and what is needed, I would advise sticking to as OEM as possible:)

the best advice I can give you is dont do "cheap" because if you do, then expect a lot of issues

buy cheap, buy twice

get a proper, tried and tested kit, that works. For a hybrid k03s, you are looking around 3k for a full install
