the 8 Vs 16 debate...

owning both my view is.......

start with the 8v,

cracking car, ive had it 2 years and the only think ive had done is a new clutch (and that was after i signed it over to my misses :think:)
Its a great car and i LOVE driving it. The pull is amazing and i could drive it all day and not go 1 mph over the speed limit. Maybe i am lucky with mine...

my 16v..

Its a nutter. The thing wants to be let loose all the time ! I wouldnt say its hard to drive everyday but again at the first sign of a bit of open road you find your self putting your foot down and smilling:clap:. Its a great reliable motor and i love my 16v....going to hang for it as long as possible.

thanks guys for all the advice... I think I'm nearing towards an 8V? Wise move on the whole? What do you think? In a year or two's time? :p

having started with an 8v at the age of 20...now have a 16v at 22 (and had a 306 gti6 inbetween....) I'd say that: 1. The insurance on the 8v is much nicer than the 16v when you're 20 2. The low down torque is amazing and gave me the feeling of being pushed into the seat when flooring it[B)] 3. The mpg is slightly better (and believe me this is an issue when you're a student...i had to sell my 306 and buy a densil 106 xnd which got me 65+mpg!! but was heartbreakingly slow to drive, all because i couldn't afford to run the high mpg car. But on the flip side....4. i would be lying if i said there wasnt much perfformance difference between the 8 and 16v 5. the 16v spoiler is so much nicer:D and 6. I have no issues with using my 16v as a daily and have achieved 41 mpg ( which was hard though!) Hope this helps ;)

thanks for that Sionowz, wise words by someone from Wales :p... are you Welsh mate? I would like to drive them both tbh and see it for myself. Yet - whichever one I choose - it's gonna be one hellova leap from 60bhp to 115 - 150bhp. :p

Haha it is abit of a jump, how do you think I felt when my uncle put me in the drivers seat of his 220bhp Mini  lol
I bet our CLS's have lost power though lol, they are 13-14 years old :cartman:

When are you gettin your 8v then :), why don't you ask for it for Crimbo ;)........lol

lol I dont expect anything for Christmas. That's hardly gonna be waiting me outside on Christmas day Arun :p... how old are you, 8? ;) ... well if I get the job in the Web's warehouse here within the next 2 - 3 weeks, let's say about after christmas time? Having said that - getting it before christmas would be ideal too - no one wants cars before xmas do they really? :)

omg guess what streg, i just literally seen one today, in an ST orange colour, it was absolutely DUCKING beautiful, had no rust or nothing, the man came out, and seen i was checking it out, i had a word with him, nice chap, spent £1000's on it though (sourcing parts was the hardest, which makes sense)

I've not seen a standard 8v yet with 115 BHP, theyre all somewhere between 120 and 125 as standard. VW played down the figures so there was a bigger gap between the 8 and 16v.

I doubt your 1.4's will of lost any power if maintained well, Mat ran a 120,000 mile X reg on a dyno and made over 60bhp.

Still a massive gap seen as they seem to go for the same money. 16v all the way i say u got power and there cheap on fuel to. a can sit on the bumper of my mate 200bhp mk golf 1.8 turbo and turn round nearly double the mpg. I went newquay the other week to rtts09 and coming back 260 mile i didnt even use half a tank ;)

It turns around 40mpg most the time tho. And i did once ask about insurance for and 8v and it was the same price one company qouted me £100 more than wot i wa payin on the 16v
