The speedo and rev counter are only backlit when the sidelights /headlights are turned on. Is this correct as it is very difficult to see the figures on the dials in this grey weather we are having......

Assuming the instrument lighting works the same as it does on VW’s, your car will have an ambient light sensor and when the sensor detects that ambient light conditions aren’t at their best (e.g. dull grey weather), your dials will dim down. This is a prompt for you to turn your lights on so you can see your dials, and with your lights on, other road users can see you.
