Insurance "jiggling" question

Hey guys.
I wonder if anyone has any knowledge about this, before I go phoning up insurance companies tomorrow.

I'll try and keep it as short as poss:

Currently insured on Hyundai Coupe 3yrs NCB.

If I was to purchase a new car shortly (LCR), got it insured with a new company (greenlight seems the cheapest so far)
and wanted to maintain cover on my coupe until it's sold etc etc, I'm assuming that the quotes I've been getting for the LCR won't be applicable, as they have taken into account the 3yrs NCB I've earnt on the coupe, and if I keep the current cover I've got on my coupe (with elephant) then I can't transfer the NCB over to the LCR. With me so far?? :)

Question. Are greenlight and others (upon me selling the coupe) able to then accept the 3yrs NCB and backdate the refund to the date the policy commenced or do they do this on a pro rata basis?

If they won't backdate, I guess I'll just have to completely cancel the elephant policy on the coupe and transfer it over to greenlight immediately. This leads me to the other question. Will greenlight, or indeed any other companies sort me out with some cheap 3rd party cover for me on the coupe until it's sold on a weekly/monthly basis. Oh and i'll probably have to add my mate onto this in order to get the old car home (he always wanted to drive it!) after picking up said LCR.

I hope that was reasonably clear, and someone is more clued up than me :)

Thanks for any advice.

Get your mate to check his policy - if he's not a teenager, and holds a full comp. policy on his own car he'll probably be insured to drive the Coupe 3rd party

If you're confident the Coupe will sell quickly, I'd be tempted to insure the LCR on a new policy with someone completly different with 2 (or even 0) NCD - pref. online to save time/effort - and use the 14-day cooling off period most insurers offer to get yourself some free insurance till you can ring elephant and change your vehicle details to the Leon ... and just run out the elephant policy till renewal time

Hello, i can't answer any of the questions you asked but this website may help www.dayinsure.com you can insure any car below £40,000 for kind of as long as you want, i think its about £12 for a day or something and they also do insurance for a month and stuff, might help you so you can transfer your insurance to your new LCR and still have your mate insured to drive Hyundai.

Thanks guys.

That day insurance thing could come in handy if his policy doesn't allow it (my elephant policy doesn't allow it until I'm 25 - 1 month!)

Leaving the elephant policy to run isn't the prefered option, as it's almost 200 more than greenlight and has 11 months remaining on it.

I'm guessing I could ask greenlight to include 3rd party cover and use that for the coupe, GENIUS! Unless...If you're using your 3rd party to cover you on another car, (i.e. the coupe) does that car have to have it's own insurance held by someone else? Or can it technically be "uninsured".

Jeeze, this insurance stuff does my head in :)

Yeah, to get your 3rd party insurance on any other vehicle it usually has to be insured seperately :(

What's the cancellation like on the elephant policy ? Might be worth giving them a ring and seeing what they'd charge to 'downgrade' your policy to TPFT for the Coupe with a view to cancelling it ASAP

You should be able to take out a new policy for the LCR using your NCD if you've only been on the new elephant one a month - did they send you a renewal letter with your 3yrs NCD on it ? (cos you'll need it for Greenlight)
