hi there through no fault of my own when my car was parked on the pavement outside my house one of the absent minded neighbours reversed into the side of it damaging the door, wing and window regulator.

my question is this what is the realistic cost of replacing a 1997 2.0 16v cupra sport with 70000 miles as i think her insurance company might be inclined to write it off

Not sure of how much but you could have a nosey on the Auto Trader website and see what that model, age and mileage car is going for.

Unless the car is worth less than £600 then I'd guess the insurance company would fix it instead of pay you more to write it off.

You could always try and fix it yourself, there are some ibiza being broken on ebay at the mo, you might be able to source the door and wing ect from there.

fixing it is not really going to be the problem what i am more concerned with is if her insurance company decide to write it off because of the cost of the bodyshop repair. they will give me a pitiful offer for the car

From my experience, they will write it off if the cost of repairs is greater than 65% of the value of the car, as they will get about 35% of the car value as salvage.

Second that. If they do want to write it off, dont by any means accept their first offer. I recently had my previous Ibiza written off, there's some information in that thread you might find useful: linky

You'd be surprised at how little damage you need to have the car written off.

Good luck with it though buddy

Wing, door and regulator shouldn't add up to more than 65%........

Have you spoke to her to see if she'd be willing to settle on a sum to get it fixed without claiming?

As said before, theres always ibiza's breaking....

And if she does want to claim and they do write it off, you don't have to accept any crap offer from the as settlement.......show them what the car is worth......providing proof of its worth, Autotrader adverts etc and get them to make a new offer....

Just to throw a spanner in the works.

I was in an accident in my old car, the cost of repairs were £100 off the total top notch price of the car. £1800 value of car and £1700 repairs.

Tescos Idiot insurance carried out repairs despite this.

Surfice to say, the car is now dead a year after the accident.

So you never can tell. Just hope that your insurance evaluation engineer is a good bloke. Mine wasn't.

no she will not settle out of her insurance as she has no claims protected and £100 excess which will be a lot cheaper than the bodyshop.(according to the neighbours this is 2nd or 3rd time shes done something like this)

the thing is if it is written off and i get it back it will always be a write off on the v5 which just means more hassle furtgher down the line when selling

Get on the Internet and start looking for all the highest priced cars of same year and spec

Definitely, I almost doubled the amount from their initial offer, just find autotrader ads/ebay cars etc going for as high as possible and use them as proof that thats how much a replacement is going to cost you in reality.

Not necessarily. I know of a case where the insurance company came to a deal that they paid out as a full write-off on the car on the condition that the insured purchased the car for it's salvage value. The insurance company agreed not to record it as a category D (lowest case write-off). Thus insured ended up with the car back and the cash to put it right, and the car retains its unblemished history.

Yep, I had a car stolen 4 days after I bought it. Insurance co came back with an offer of £500 less than my purchase price, so wrote them a letter telling them they were taking the p*** and enclosed 3 cars off autotrader going for more than the price of the car I'd bought. They eventually refunded my purchase price, less excess.
