Is my clutch OK?

Hi all

I picked my 100tdi car up a few days ago and noticed that the clutch judders very slightly when I take up drive in 1st.

Now I'm not sure if it needs bedding in or not, but the car is 3 months old and has done only 30 miles.So the car could of been stood a while at the dealers, would that be a reason for the judder or could it be a problem?

The way it happens is if I take up drive 'very carefully' in 1st without using the gas pedal, the car pulls off fine, but the clutch judders the car. Now its not the engine struggling cos I tell that

I'll be talking to the dealers (GKSeat Derby) but just thought I'd ask you guys 'n gals if its normal

I think I nkow what your talking about mate, I have a small amount of Judder when taking off in 1st but IMO it's due to 1st gear being very short and the fact that its an oil burner!

Let us know what the dealer says.

I very rarely use my first gear, lol.

Maybe as Brian said - it may be down to the shortness of the ratio or maybe as you both have a new clutch?

I've just been out for a drive and it seems to be getting better, car now has 250 miles on the clock. So maybe its because the clutch needed a bit of bedding in...or still does...

I know the brakes are still not bedded in yet cos the discs arent nice and smooth/shiny....So maybe just needs a few more miles sticking on the clock.. Oh the pain of having to drive it some more

Still gonna see what the dealer says tho, just in case.

100bhp tdi's have longer 1st gears due to the lack of 6th...

Its because its brand new buddy, get 1000 miles on it and it'll be fine!

I think you will find that the jugger is a characteristic of the duel mass flywheel, if you use a little gas and pick the rev's up a touch the judder will go

my 20vt does this too

the duel mass flywheel is like 2 smaller flywheels connected together by springs, this is to act like a damper and reduce transmission lash and damage to the clutch/gearbox if you are one of these people that treat the clutch/gas pedals like an on/off switch

Update:

Car has just over a thousand miles on the clock now, and went into the dealers today to have the 'judder' looked at.

Got a call this afternoon, and the lady on the service desk tells me they are going to replace the clutch and flywheel..

It should be done on Friday, if the parts arrive. I'm having something around the steering wheel/column replaced too, there's a catching type noise when turning left..

So far so good with GKSeat Derby. They have always called me back and listened to what I've said.. Good service and cant complain.

I'll post back when its sorted

yer agree with that chr15b, most em would just say its like that. You will have to let us know if them changing the parts fixes it, as I always thought as nath says it was just part of having a dual mass fly wheel. Know even the PD100 (02) Im buying had it.

On a positive note I get the car on sunday WOOOp

UPDATE:

Just got back from the dealers, and could tell the difference straight away

The take up of drive is now nice and smooooooth, and a joy to use in traffic and on hills.

They have replaced the clutch and dual mass flywheel.

It was ready yesterday, but when I went to pick it up the catching noise on the steering wheel was still there, even though they had replaced the 'clock spring'! So I left it with them (5pm+), for the technician to have a look himself next day.

They called to say was fixed late this mornin........Turned out to be a manufacturers STICKER catching inside...Had to laugh and so did the guy on the phone

So all is good with the car and have to say even though GKSeat at Derby is a 40min drive from here (not my local Seat dealer), they have been fantastic at keeping me informed and treating me like a valued customer. Even though I dont really know any of them the service has been great, so think its only fair I go and make a post in the Dealers section of these forums.

Sounds like good service that.

The clutch in my Passat (PD130) judders on take-up, the first few times I pull away on colder days at this time of year. But it's on 140,000 miles with the original clutch so I can't really complain....
