so went to top up oil this evening and found this friend said must be headgasket on way out...
heard this is an expensive job what are my options and chances it might be something less expensive?

Is there the same gunk in the coolant tank and on the end of the dipstick??? If not could be just condensation that occurs in the cold weather after short journeys

coolant is still pink and at same level as it has been since buying it 6 months ago and no signs of gunk on end of dipstick

Then more than likely just condensation build up, very common on most cars this time of year especially if doing alot of short journeys

i do to and from work daily 4 miles so my guess is on that aswell will clean the gunk and keep and eye on it

I do 2 miles to work and 2 back and mine looks like an icecream cone. Incidentally I did have a head gasket failure recently and it was obvious because I've flushed the coolant tank 3 times and it's still plastered in oil.

Defo nothing to worry about if coolant levels / condition is fine mate

Clean the gunk from the filler cap and check any breather hoses for more of the same, and, give the car a decent run weekly.
