Is the 1.8 Tsi taboo?

I've been looking at the FR 1.8Tsi DSG for a good few weeks now but trying to find some real feedback is proving difficult. I've tried the search, honestly

I know the diesel is the one everyone raves about but, if it's to be a Leon then petrol it is.. Is there a particular reason that they are so rare? I can't even find on to test drive! The nearest I got was a diesel but I'm guessing that they are very different.

Anyone able to give some feedback? Smooth to drive,quiet drive, typical mpg stv?

The 1.8 feels a bit stronger and keeps pulling with higher rpm, whilst there's not much point in using the last 1000rpm in the 1.4, fuel consumption is around 20% more than the 1.4.
The biggest advantage is that cars with the 1.8 get the more advanced rear suspension and bigger brakes.
Downside is the engine looks like it'll be shortly replaced with a 2.0ACT which will probably have a negative effect on residuals.

You pays your money, and takes your choice...

Many thanks for the info . You've helped make up my mind and I'm going for the 1.8. I don't do much more than 8k pa anyway. Seems plenty of info on here too.

I've have a SC 180 FR DSG{Titanium} on a 53 plate from new now for nearly 3yrs...only because I couldn't get a 184 TDI FR SC DSG at the time as they didn't come out until the new year 2014..having had 2 previous TDI FR DSG 170 before...the only down side was the torch and fuel milage ...but aye what a great motor it is smooth, responsive and a great drive....I have on order another Leon SC DSG but this time I've gone for the TDI 184 {Titanium limited edition} collect in Sept look'in forward to that

Thanks for that Guns. Trying the Vauxhall Astra 1.4 auto turbo next week. Not too keen on the Astra but have 3 days with it anyway. The lure of the 180 with Dsg is still there though. I think the Leon looks much better and its looking like I'll go with the ST.

Im driving ST 1.8 manual as the DSG wasn't as an option in IRL. I have it over 2 year's now and i cannot say a bad word about this engine. Petrol consumption is great 7l/100km, mostly in the city. And what is most important - no DPF. I have not added in single drop of oil since i have the car (annual milage 15k.)

Ordered a 1.8 FR dsg ST and I am expecting to take delivery the week after next unless motability will let me wait so it's a 66 plate

That's great news mate. Did you manage to test drive one? Can't get one to try for love nor money up here. Probably going to order the ST next week anyway. I've had a 3 day test drive of Astra 1.4 auto 150 bhp. Not too bad but, shiny gloss panel on the dashboard gives terrible reflection in sunlight. Looking at the SEAT again shows off superior interior!

Capitol Seat in Newport had a red 3 door SC DSG which was my original choice until I realized how big the doors were and it drove like a dream. I was amazed when on the test drive I was at about 40 in 7th and I gave kick down and it dropped to 3rd and took off like a scalded cat. The car was quiet and refined but put in to sport and the roar from the engine was very pleasant not to mention addictive particularly higher in the rev range. I looked at the Astra estate as well and the rear visibility was not as good and it did not have a CD player as standard which I missed in my previous car lol

some of us do not have the means or the ability to get a Cupra and any of the other engines are more than enough to lose your license and cost less in fuel doing it!!!
