I think it will be classed as a hot hatch classic, i think mechanically they should be up there with the best hot hatches ever.

I love my LCR and I want to keep it forever!!

that was awful overlooking it was 0.01 of a second slower than a civic type-r and nearly a second quicker than the golf, quite annoyed actually, must get of my soapbox!

I know, unbelievable overlooking. The LCR was hardly mentioned!

Not only that, the MK5 Golf GTI is not as good as everybody thinks. Believe me, I owned one for 3 months. Got fed up with it and bought a LCR!

What I like about the LCR is that I don't see many around. I have had civic type r, s and they are everywhere but when I am driving in my LCR I don't see many around..

There is a thread on here about how many lcrs are left on GB roads. Numbers are quite shocking. The problem I see with it , is these cars can be picked up for pence now. I've come across this a few times now where I've seen a Lcr , full of spotty chavs , ragging the hell out of it. Drive like a pillock , crash it, and then move onto another cheap turbo car.
Not saying everyone is a spotty Chav who has one, but when you can pick these up for as low as 2k , its every boy racers dream. I don't think the Lcr will quite make it as a classic. It's a shame as I love my lc. Brilliant cars , fun to drive........ Just not quite got the classic look ....... Well not yet anyway.

For an example of the LCR being overlooked, take a look at this from Top Gear:
http://vimeo.com/35338999

Skip to the end and check out the lap times, then see the blatant 'overlooking'!

Disgusting!

They can't even get the bloody name right!! They wouldnt put 'Honda Civic Type' would they!

That's ridiculous, they are saying the Honda is cheaper and faster but isn't as good as a VW... Well the LCR is cheaper and faster and IS essentially a VW!!

Has anyone else ever thought that the LCR and the mk1 cupras are marmite cars? My mates and misses were always split right down the middle about my mk1. I've never seen my mates so divided over a single car, there is nearly always a consensus. Some loved it, some hated it. I don't know how that will affect it's status as a classic car. But It's definitely overlooked.

"The problem I see with it , is these cars can be picked up for pence now." - This. I got my mk1 when I was 20 and still a student with two part time jobs. Owning and being able to (just) afford a car like a cupra with 180+ brake was a complete and utter pipe dream for 20 year olds until fairly recently. The insurance was just about manageable and the car itself was actually cheaper than a similar age decent looking super mini run about that most people buy as their first car. I used to be sitting there driving along thinking how on earth am I driving a car like this when everyone else at uni has a crappy banger - I have seriously miscalculated this and am going to pay the price when something goes wrong - but it never did. The more I write now the more I miss it ha :( Time to go and sob.

I think all it will take is one or two more future cupr r's to come out then topgear mag and others to write how the old one is still good value for money and you've got yourself a classic

Have a peep at this German TV show's LCR (AMK 210bhp) road test and spot the lap times for the handling course:

LCR - 20.14 secs
CTR - 20.31 secs

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x20xkb_seat-leon-cupra-r-1-8-t_auto#.UbI6gBZFse4

Also worth noting power-to-weight ratios: CTR 165bhp/tonne; LCR 156bhp/tonne. And the CTR had a decent OE-spec tyre, Bridgestone RE040, whereas the LCR's was the Pirelli P-Zero.

Interesting article at PistonHeads re a £9k Mk1 GTI and a £20k Talbot Sunbeam Lotus, etc:
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/default.asp?storyId=28359

It seems that every couple of years, Autocar publishes a Mk1 LCR buying-guide and Evo has done a similar article.

All of which seems to suggest that unmodified LCRs will gain cult/classic status, with prices reflected accordingly. And it helps that the LCR's styling still looks pretty crispy.

Hmmm,

Its very hard to say, would a mint, standard MK1 LCR be held in just as high esteem in 10 years time as much as a late 80's/90's car is now, such as 'say' a mint;

Ford
Series 1 or 2 Escort RS Turbo
Fiesta RS Turbo,
Escort Cosworth
3 door Sierra Cosworth or Sierra Sapphire Cosworth and RS500 Sierra Cosworth

Mk1 VW Golf GTi, MG Maestro or Montego Turbo, or any other 'turbo' car from that era?

Certainly, a well looked after LCR will get admiring glances, but very hard to say if they'd be an appreciating classic

how many Mk1 Leon Cupra R's were made? as this will determine if it will, for example, if the MK1 LCR was a limited production run, then yes, in a few years, you could have a rare modern classic that will only go up in value.

If the LCR is just another model that's not limited then it'll be harder to say

Put it this way, the Ford Racing Puma, out in 2000, was a limited production run of 500, this is the only 'modern' car that I can think of at the moment that has a likelihood of becoming a future classic.

Out of the original 500 built how many are left, and of those how many are unmolested - if you have one then keep it safe in a garage as the value will only go one way.....

Thats harsh. Any cosworth In my opinion is far better than any vw car of the time. The sierra being my all time favourite car. Cosworths haven't dropped in price for over 15 years they just keep going up and must be the ultimate modern classic particulaly the rs500.
