Just wondered as the cap I fitted recently was designed so it would only fit properly one way round.

i have now also changed the fuel relay and the dizzy cap, still no help and getting worse. It will cut out about 2 times daily now, just slowing to a roundabout and kaput!!! it always starts again first time, idol is always lumpy though.

What else could it be? cant be too many more things to waste my money on?

Im thinking of trying a engine/crank speed sensor next although it didnt come up on the diagnostics so im confused!!! any ideas???

Come on guys?!!! If it helps, ive got the general feel that its a problem with the fuel not getting there, rather than the spark. Mainly because when it cuts out, if i try to start it, it will turn over but wont fire up untill i pump the accelerator!!!

Really startin to get on my nerves now!!!

Heya ive had the same sort of problems with mine and i sorted it now,

Lits of things changed

Coil Pack
Spark Plugs
HT Leads
Rotor Arm
Distributer Cap
Fuel Pump Relay
ECU Control Relay

The main problem that i have put my fault down to is that the intake manifold was filthy and caped in grime!

Go down to halfords or a motor factors and buy yourself some Carb cleaner (Cost me £4.99)
disconnect the pipe running from the air box to the intake manifold and squirt that stuff in there,
Also get a old toothbrush and scrub at it till all the debris and grime has been removed.
Then with it all disconnected make sure nothing is near the intake manifold and go turn your car over, might not start the first time but keep trying.
With the engine idleing spray some more of the carb cleaner in and give it some revs.

My car feels a while lot better to drive and doesnt cut out at roundabouts any more :D

Shane - i had exactly the same problem with my GTi, i changed the engine speed sensor without result, well - it changed it from a cut out to a stutter... i changed something after that which sorted it, but i need to call someone in the morning to find out what it was.

Your symptoms sound remarkably similar to mine!!

Shane - just spoken to the chap - it was the RPM meter that was replaced. I can't really point anymore than that, as i didn't change it over or anything.

Ah thanks for that darren, i'll pop down euro car parts and see what they come in at.

In the meantime, i took f17th advice and used some carb cleaner, cleaned out all the air intake (which was filthy) not had a chance to see whether it worked or not yet tho, because i broke something!

The little black box on top of the rocker cover with the double pipe coming out, well the pipes with absolutely loaded with crap so i thought id get a toothbrush with carb cleaner in there! well the one that leads down to the bottom of the engine now has a massive hole in it, (looks like it got demolieshed by the carb clearner i was scrubbin it with)

does anyone know what this is, what it does, how important it is? and how much to replace?

i'd REALLY appreciate a reply!!

thanks

I think its a EGR pipe ?

Probably a Seat or VW part mate, not sure how important it is but probably not good running the car without it.

I didnt clean them pipes just the intake manifold.

Yea thats what i thought, its got VW and what looks like a part number on it so i might phone around and have a look. For meantime ive wrapped the pipe in tape, its only air that goes through it so shouldnt be too much of a problem at the moment.

Anyone know if carb cleaner is known for perishing rubber? becuause it really is bu**ered! rubbers gone weird, like its melted or somet!!

Good news though, think cleaning the tb has fixed it, drove it round lastnight and this morning and its perfect, revs havent dropped below 1000rpm once, not even nearly cut out and runs a hell of a lot smoother! i cant believe it was such a simple fix!!! Thanks alot for your replies everyone!!!
