Damn car!
Getting an intermittant issue with the car dying as the revs drop when you come to a set of lights /junction etc, unless i sit there keeping revs up over 3k...
cleaned the throttle body out last week, have also replaces a split/cracked /decomposing hose (little one that comes away from/goes into the TB, joins the casing of the TB to the little thin pipe with two crimp connectors  ) cant see any more obvious hoses that are splitting etc. Did a trip to Bristol recently without a murmer, yet done a few local runs and it dies/cuts out. also seems to hit a lag on acceleration as if its hunting for fuel, to the point where you feel as if your going through the windscreen as the car suddenly loses power?!?!?!

gonna check the fuel relay this afters, as the search tends to throw this up as a common (?) cause of these type of issues...
anyone any definative ideas as to the cause or is it pretty much a case of search/destroy (err swap) untill the issue is resolved?
also points towards possible fuel sender / fuel filter

got to the point of royally p-ing me off now so ...........

OO yOO callin' 'Thingy' ?
;)

it seems to idle ok.. its just as the revs drop , it just wants to cut out, if I put my foot on the loud pedal, it seems to cut it dead? so i have to ease off, let the revs pick up a tad, then keep them up about 3k

a above idle control valve if it's pre 95 (for golfs anyway) running bosch management, i belive iirc hitatchi management doesn't have icv.

i have some bosch ones lying about if need be, try taking it off and cleaning it out with some choke/carb cleaner first. (if you have one that is) i'm not up to speed with all things seat yet experience is in vw's.

not sure on the symptoms but my 16v has a micro switch on the throttle mech at the back of the manifold that has had it's wiring repaired and it seems to be the same repair on all the ones i have seen so far so might be worth a check

i think the manifold heats the wires out

been out and removed the little glovebox, and the panel below to get easy access to the fuseboard..
most of the relays seemed to be loose tbh.. re-sat them all in fully, went for a local drive(slowed almost to a stop at all the junctions, then a blat down the m5, then back along the local roads allowing the revs to drop, car to pretty much come to a halt then pick up from about 800 revs in 2nd gear right up to 3,5K /4K revs and all *seems* fine.. sodding typical, it'll prob play up if i try again later/tomorrow.

Had this on my 16v for ages - spark good everything working ok. Replaced temp sensor to engine in the end and one month later - same fault!!!!!!
Turned out to be the coil in the end. May be worth a look - it had a tiny crack in it allowing water and sh**e in. Worked great when hot on long runs then casued all sorts of hell when cooling down.

Had a similar issue on a 93 Golf Mk2 16v. Idled OK, then as soon as you drove it and came to a stand still just died.

There were 2 things I found to b at fault:

1) Idle stabilization valve (located RHS of manifold on 16v KR lump)
2) A switch on the back of the throttle body needed adjusting (and cleaning with contact cleaner).

Long time ago now so memory has faded of exact detail.

Best of luck sorting it.

ive heard alot of problems with both 8v's and 16v's being linked back to the coolant temp sensor ( usually the blue one )

if all else fails ive got VAGCOM and the lead... somewhere .

ORRR it doesnt like the wheels you bought it and should give them me.

dolly, wouldnt mind a tinker with the Vag-Com if your about anytime.. (also got the dreaded Airbag light on, but i kinda know where the issue is there )
and as for the rims ...ch'yeah, riiiight!! :p

shouldnt be the battery but will get my multi meter to it and test it and afraid not its a 1.4 (blown head gasket so got a 1.6) but its the salsa lol.

Air flow meter but not worth replacing @ about £60 / £70.

Buy some dry solvent (I use elecsolve) hold rev's around 3k and spray into air intake after removing whatever filter you have. As you spray the revs will drop. When they do, stop spraying keep throttle on, wait for revs to pick up again and keep repeating. Take her out for a test after maybe 30 - 60secs. If its getting better but still wants to drop a little below 'normal' idle then repeat again.

i have done this today (without reading your reply) with Carb cleaner and its worked almost instantly, will repeat it a few more times and will let you all know if this works!
