My beeza has gone bang comming back from town today, by the looks of it, its the chain drive to the front cams, so my valves could be in pieces  :censored: anyone any ideas how much i would cost me to fix? im going to try and get some quotes tomorrow.

some valves, some cams, some followers

hopefully the bits didn't get into the piston.

2nd hand head will see you right, and they're not too bad (since a whole new engine can be seen for £400)

Yeah was thinking of a second hand head? any idea where i can get one from? or is it an ebay jobbie?

cheers

Ali

www.editiion38.com have a good forum. I think that you should be able to scavange all the bits you need from a 1.8 16v head

the pain in the ass is that 'a' valve isn't that dear, it's the 15 others that add up

Cheers m0rk, looks like its only going to be the inlet valves which are screwed. what oil are you running your cordy on mate? i changed to fully sinthetic 5-30w and was wondering if thats what made my chain break.

cheers

£6.50 for an inlet, £6 for an exhaust valve
cam follower £6.50
valve guide £2
cylinder head bolt £2

New cam chain, cam belt, cam tensioner
Head gasket

I'll have a look - but it wasn't what they recommend as std... I think it was something 5W 40 - I'll have to find the can.

Thanks, ive got some time off so will see if i can do the fix myself, will be a first, never tried anything like this:-o

if you cant find an abf head a 1.8 16v kr head from mk2 golf's work fine also, i had one fitted when my abf went bang also, gives slightly more torque lower down the revs too.

I just hope the valves are ok, there is a slight chance that they survived, but its doubtful, i was wondering what was making a rattling noise, must have been the chain drive to the inlet valve camshaft, not much i could have done :(

im not sure what you mean but my timig belt snapped if its anything similar, 8v fortunately but stil had to replace 3-4 of them. it depends on what you did after it happened as well, i tried to turn it over a good few times which didnt help.

if its not the timing belt/chain then....... oops

Did you change the filter when you changed to synthetic oil?

I didn`t once in a scirocco GTI and put a piston throught the block

Yes i changed the filter, i also ran the engine first with the new oil for an hour or so and changed it again to remove as much of the old oil as possilbe,

took the cam cover off today to assess the damage, and the chain is in one piece  the timing belt is a bit loose though, so i can only assume that it has taken some of the teeth off or something. Looks like the valves may be ok ( i wish) only 2 sets are in the partially open position.
