Right time for an update. Due to work and recent deployments planned, I've decided to keep the car as it's a good example and, like the tdi it's had some hard work put into it over the last year. The car is ready for stage 2 and benefits from loads of further upgrades to make it unique. The thing that let's it down is the paint, but I have a bonus in June so I will allocate a few quid to get some panel imperfections done and the wheels.
Onto the update, first things first. She needs a coolant change, so I put her on the ramp and took the under tray off and to my absolute disgust I fount this.
That's the aluminium block on the o/s of the engine, that is bolted to the engine, then to the engine mount underneath the power steering resivior. It's a long story, but the second reason it was on the ramp was because the exhaust was rattling on the middle bracket, the long metal support underneath. Turns out, it was only rattling because the engine had moved that much that the exhaust was kissing the support and giving the most horrible vibration at low revs.
So, initially I just pulled the mount back to the block by doing the lower bolt up. This gave me space to get my hand up to feel the upper bolt which was loose and on further inspection (after ripping the top apart) I found it had snapped. I also took the middle one out and found this was bent, and the threads had actually cracked so it must have been on the brink of snapping!
That's what it looked like, I'd removed everything to allow me access to the cambelt and pump, so should have done it myself then this wouldn't have happened! I struggled to get the snapped shank of the bolt out of the block, I had to avoid the cambelt with the windy drill.
So I replaced the bolts, torqued them and put a few drops of thread lock on and put it all back together.
2nd
problem, I was changing the fuel filter and I snapped a connection on the in line pipe. Long story short, I dropped the beam and tank for access to later find out there is an inspection panel underneath the rear bench. Lol! I was annoyed, it's all back together now so happy days.
That's all done, new fuel filter on and back together.
Finally, as you can imagine I was pretty annoyed at this point. So, my powerflex wishbones arrived, I removed the wish bones, pressed the old bushes out and chiselled the rings out and pressed the new ones in. Didn't get any photos though.
She's back together now, waiting for tracking and I should be able to enjoy her again. Cheers for reading.
