Oh yeah, 'cos 2nd & 3rd gear in a Cupra TDI isn't worth a toss is it?

He didn't say that - 2nd and 3rd in the TDI are very good too...but as has been said, they go on for longer on the 20vt.

I think generally 0-60 times are quoted when the car has a full tank of fuel and 2 (maybe more actually) passengers. So you will more often than not see a better time than quoted, but of course this applies to all cars so not a way of comparing diesels and petrols. And the petrol does have a better 0-60 time than the derv.

But anyway, I didn't intend this thread to be another petrol vs derv thread. When I had the derv I preferred the petrol, and now I have the petrol I still prefer it. But that's just my personal taste. Maybe some of the derv Cupra drivers haven't tried the petrol one

Id agree with that - Saw the mag review with the Clio too. So after 60 the CTR wins outright? It be interesting to see how much ground it makes up from the Beeza TDI after 60-120mph?

Yeah, around 60/70 the Civic starts pulling away markedly. We weren't going that fast but let's say it was becoming obvious which was the quicker car over the 1/4 mile, say compared with the "15"-60 dash.

I also know from one of our unscientific 'tests' that, given a certain distance, the Civic will pull a good 20mph on the Cupra from a 30mph start by the end point.

A point about the "mid-range" etc. We've done some serious miles following each other (London to Nice and back), the Cupra was more effective at overtaking in a lazy sort of way; no big down shifts, just squirt and go. That's what diesel drivers talk about when they're on about 'real-world' and 'mid-range shove'. However, when the Type-R was properly wound up and in the VTEC, it was definitely more than a match and I'd even go as far as to say it could overtake in places that the Cupra couldn't (safely). Handling wise, the CTR would hand the Cupra it's bottom in the dry. Brakes, conversely, were better in the Cupra. Less prone to fade and stronger; my brother's were warped by the end of our French adventures, mine are fine.

Agree about the brakes and handling in the CTR/Cupra. The rear suspension on the CTR is a good feature. But the VTEC engine is almost the exact opposite of the Cupra PD engine, requiring you to reve the feck out of it to get into the power band. The petrol Cupra is somewhere in between and not so extreme at low or high revs.

Plus it sounded awesome going through French N-roads, listening to it overtake with the window down. Screams like a banshee!

Plus France is very beautiful, with lots to see and do, other than terrorising other tourists :D

i hate these petrol vs derv thread wreckers! :ban: if you want to go calulating your mpg ect and boasting do it but we not fussed about it unless the question has been asked ;)

some people like going FAST and dont do penny pinching and some like to go slower and beg on the streets :hide: :bleh:

simple as that :D

^^^^^^^what he said, I bet it was a derv geek that started it

i'm gonna stay out of this one 'cos with a 16valver we dont get any of the benefits of either car torque or mpg or turbo (yet) well a better soundtrack helps :) @ 8000 rpm you can only just hear the mrs screaming - bonus

mixing the 2 together is interesting after using a tdi gearbox in mine for a while

just wanted to say nice one kriso - nice car m8

whilst you lot are happy squirting fuel at each other - keep the matches in ya pocket ;)

Cheers, Fl@pper :)

Rich, I'm not commenting on who started the petrol v derv debate, but the thread was quiet for 2 months until the debate started up :)

Is it ok to like going fast, but not to be able to afford the cost of running a petrol car? Especially when your manage to have a week were you only get 190mile to a tank of derv...

I think its time for a some upgrades to my cupra though, probably get coilovers and a rear arb first but then again a nice sounding miltek exhaust and remap would be nice too...

We better stop breathing and stop the cows from farting too. All of that produces a hell of alot more Carbon Dioxide than cars do :D
