Just Smashed My Sump

joy upon joy..... i've broken my new sump too!!!!

not even two weeks! there is alot of constuction up the road from me and last time it was half a brick so you can understand i'd be wary, but there's loads of dirt on the road and what looked like a lump of mud had a large stone in it and cracked my new sump! grrrreat!

possibly, how much to have a plate welded on the bottom? both broke in the same place, at the bottom next to the sump plug.

How much hassle are these to fit?

I should be getting my baffled sump through from Backdraft this week and only really have one evening to do it in. As the car needs to be ready for a track day next week I can't risk getting half way through and finding any complications.

I'm advised I need sump sealant as opposed to a gasket which I'll get on order today, but does anything need to be moved to change the sump over or is it a straight simple swap?

i'm not sure about the baffled item but i'm on my 4th sump now and it's a relatively easy swap.

the only awkward bit is the 4 bolts at the gearbox end, the two outer ones are relatively easy to remove but the inner two are a bit of a .

when you come to remove these two there is a notch in the flywheel to give you a little more access, you have to turn the engine by hand to line this notch up with each of the two bolts.

when replacing repeat the same proccess but it's easier if you have some means of securing the bolt head in the socket, if you drop it when fitting it up in can get lodged between the sump and flywheel and be quite problematic to get it out. i fold over a small peice of paper or carrier bag, place it over the head of the bolt then wedge the socket over it so the bolt won't fall out of the socket.

what the hell do they put on English roads? second person this week that cracked his sump on a brick on the road...?

and there is those you dont hear about...

Its scary how many potential dangers there on british roads.
Even things like speed humps can be dangerous for those that have lowered their cars a we have ones that dont strecth across the entire road.
(funny as buses, lorries and huge 4x4s can straddle theses and not have to slow down at all. 'city cars' are the ones most affected!)

Ive had to drive over frozen slush this last few days and could hear it scraping the bottom of the sump.
Ever heard of this causing damage ? I was only doing 5mph. No way of avoiding it as it was in the middle of the road.
I had a cracked sump once before ,that was with a rock .

Annoying thing is Ihad it in for a service only last week , now I might have to take it back again .

Not trying to be funny but....surely you should just higher your car a bit? - especially if you know there are road works and this is the 4th!! time you have broken a sump?

Surely the handling is compromised being that low anyway - wishbone angle and suspension geometry etc must be awfull.

id be interested in getting a sump with a plate welded on it if its not an arm and a leg, or if they could provide the plate or price of the plate and ill get one welded on myself,

also does anyone know how much they are

I bought my sump from Backdraft which is baffled with proper motorsport rubber flaps and a 4mm alloy scuff gaurd welded onto the bottom - £250 delivered and they offer free fitting if you go to their workshop. Not sure anyone offers just a normal sump with a scuff gaurd but if you sent yours in I'm sure they'd do it for you - best bet is to contact Alex

was gonna buy a normal sump if they werent costing the world brand new and plate it, as i cant justify 250 for a baffled sump as i wont be using mine on the track
