keeps cutting out while driving

hi all, got a problem with my leon cupra tdi, while driving it on saturday it cut out all of a sudden and wouldnt restart, my fella had a look and found that the fuel filter was empty, so he took the return to tank pipe off and switched the ignition on and off a few times to refill the filter and then it struck up. carried on driving it and it was fine on the way home. went out in it yesterday and i did the same to him so brought it home and took the pump out to clean it and put an airline down the pipe to the filter and it came out like a slug but was black as hell, after that the line was clear. cleaned the pump and put it back together tried and was fine till today when it has done the same again. he is all out of ideas so can you suggest anything to try. thanks in advance.

I would probe into the fuel pump feed(meter or bulb) to see if it keeps running after starting because it runs at key on does not mean all is well it may run five mins' and then stop could be relay or ecu

Check the fuel pipes are on the right way round, seen this many times where the filter is changed and the pipes are fitted back incorrectly causing the car to start but eventually cut out.

Fuel pump failure

109 relay failure

And crankshaft sensor failure

Can all cause intermittent cutting out.

Any luck sorting this issue? a friend is having the same issue with his tdi.
He thinks it showed a earth problem so had it checked at SEAT and so say redone but still cuts out.

As MJ superb advise, will be tank sender/lift pump faliure or the 109 relay
