Hi all, I was wondering if any of you know how long the battery of the car key lasts. I've had my car for three years and a half now and I'm wondering if the time is coming when I have to change the battery so not to be locked outside the car. :D

i think when it starts dying you'll find your self having to be closer and closer to the car to open it.

not like one day it works and the next it doesn't.

is this true? i'm guessing lol sounds logical eh

Well, the important thing is that it gives me a sign of some sort if it's running low, so I can do something about it.

Can the battery only be changed at a Seat dealer?

afaik it pulls apart some how and replace, think the battery is a watch type so nothing special.

Only thing that I would add to what has been said, is to change it before five years and buy a "good" battery as VAG tend to use Panasonic (I think). If you take too long to change the battery, you might have to re-sync the remote function to your car - but your handbook will have the details. I think that the current statement on when to change your key battery is two years though. Most VAG forums have a "how to do it" section and that should include fob battery changing - if not use "search" and you should find a thread that covers it.

But what about the alarm? Won't it go off if I open the door without making the car go "beep beep" first?

I hope I made sense there...

I think that you have 5 or 10 seconds to get the key into the ignition switch before the alarm goes off if you open the car with the key in the driver's door lock.

yeah i've already replaced mine after 4 years worth of use, its easily to take apart just requires some small flatheads to pry it all apart. Just refer to the how-to section for the flip blade key to get the idea of how to do it.
